Soon after paying off his brother s criminal debtors, Russell lands in prison thanks to a mishap that wasn t really his fault. He endures brutality there, and emerges years later. But stronger doesn t mean bigger (very important! ) and the less strength you have, the fewer calories you are burning while you read this blog, while you run and while you do just about anything. Most of the other actors are wasted, including Saldana, who s stuck in a generic girlfriend role (though she has one effective, painful scene with Bale on a wooden bridge), and Sam Shepard as Russell s uncle, who joins the hero on his adventures but doesn t get much dialogue or meaningful action. Shot “entirely and proudly” (per the end credits) on 35mm Kodak film by the cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi (“The Grey,” “Silver Linings Playbook”), the images have an ashen pallor that calls to mind William Blake and his “dark Satanic mills. Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker. Harrelson is scarily effective as the movie’s hillbilly Walter White, precisely because he never descends into the lip-smacking movie villainy, always seeming — like all of the characters in “Out of the Furnace” — a product of his bleak environment. I mention Affleck specifically because he rarely receives ample praise for his impressive renditions. Not to mention that during weight loss, about 25% of the weight you lose could actually be lean tissue like muscle. I was immediately invested in the characters -- warts and all. As painful as many of their decisions were to watch, I went along for those very bumpy rides, because any other course taken would be untrue for these characters. Also, I felt that the Pearl Jam number that opens and closes the film was a perfect choice for the intended vibe, and deserves a special mention. Overall, this movie is very well done, despite lacking the glamour and flash of an action flick. However, cracks appeared quickly in how fast Bale was jailed, how quick his woman left him and how little their relationship mattered to the plot. I want to care for the characters and Saldana got zero screen time to care for her, so much so that when she announced her big news, who really cared?
