Over the course of 30 years, Ferdowsi (d. 1025) wrote the 50,000 lines that make up the Persian epic poem, the Shahnameh. The poem is a legendary epic about the pre-Islamic history of Persia. Ferdowsi's final edition of the poem was presented to the Turkic leader Mahmud of Ghazni in 1010 in seven volumes.
