Herat Journalists

Since the last ten years Afghan Journalism schools have produced many professional journalists. Tens of journalists graduate from the Journalism Faculty of Herat University every year, and they work at different TV&Radio Stations as the people’s representatives for conveying information and the latest events for them.

Omar Nasir Mojaddidi is a 24-year-old boy who has already graduated from the Journalism school of Herat University. He is now the head of Zohal World Radio Station who has had more than 15 other journalists work with him.

He says that Afghan media could have had the people participate in different fields of Afghanistan. For example, they can tell their complaints about their social, cultural and many other problems to their governmental officials in order to be solved. Omar Nasir Mojaddidi said: “Our Radio Station has a program by the name of Herat Debate, and we broadcast it two times a month. On this Radio program we invite the representatives of the distant villages who have a great number of social problems as well as the officials who are responsible.” He said last week we invited five representatives from Guzarah District who had no access to fertilizers, so they invited the head of Herat Agriculture Department and discussed about their problems. He said that on that program they solved 80% of Guzarah District agricultural key challenges.

He said that was not the only problem they solved through their Media, but they have decreased the number of forced marriages in Herat too. For example, once a week they invite the elders and the religious clerics of the villages have suffered forced marriages. They discuss about the subsequent challenges their under aged daughters may face through the forced marriages. He added that they find a woman who has suffered from such a big problem. Then, they talk about that social challenge Afghan women have occasionally faced. Thus, the number of such challenges highly decrease.

Afghanistan is a country which has suffered three decades of war, and most of its victims were the women. Women who were held back from education and other social activities. Hence, the media have played the key role for Afghan women and have informed them of their basic social and political rights. Now women are in the society among the people and enjoy their rights.
