Hasn’t won a race since August 24 last year, but wasn’t disgraced in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, finishing third, ahead of fellow Melbourne Cup runners Precedence and Opinion.

19. Lidari (10)

Made Lucia Valentina work for the win in the Turnbull Stakes and also produced a solid sixth-placed finish in the Caulfield Cup. Two miles looks a bridge too far at this stage though.

20. Opinion (14)

Went in as favourite for the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and disappointed to run seventh. Did finish second over the same distance in the Sydney Cup earlier this year, but the Sydney Cup is not the Melbourne Cup.

Last two runs where he finished fifth in the Caulfield Cup and third in the Metropolitan have impressed and he is well suited in the weights. Could surprise.

22. Lucia Valentina (2)

Finished a gutsy third in the Caulfield Cup, but her heroics were overlooked as everyone cast their eyes towards the Japanese winner. Still has plenty of class and could easily surprise over the distance.

23. Unchain My Heart (5)

The only horse in the field to have won over 3200 metres at Flemington, winning the past two editions of the Andrew Ramsden Stakes. Unfortunately that win means little by comparison to the wins the internationals have managed and is probably just making up the numbers here.
