Patience “Sabr” in Islam

Posted on at

Patience (Sabr): There are many definitions done from different perspectives for it. But sabr we can say simply is a situation of someone being in very difficult circumstances, but has to choose endurance or forbearing instead showing negative or harsh reaction.

Patience has a special place and importance in Islam and being a true Muslim and good believer, one should always remember it. Nowadays, the characteristic which is lacking among our people especially the young ones is patience/forbearing.

So a true Muslim should like a mountain be constant and forbear the hardness and harshness of the life.

There are many verses of the Holy Qur’an through which Allah Almighty has emphasized on sabr or patience. I shall not all, but few verses of the Holy Qur’an as follows:

Surah Al-Imran 200: ((O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (thank your enemy))

Surah Al-Baqarah 155: ((And certainly, we shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to Assabirun (the patient)))

Surah Az-Zumar 10: ((Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning))

Surah Ash-Shura 43: ((And verily, whomsoever shows patience and forgiveness, that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah))

There are Sayings “Ahadith” of the Holy prophet on sabr as well, some of which we shall quit as follows:

Hazrati Abi Yahya Sohaib Ibni Sinan رضی الله عنه   has narrated from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be up on him):  The Holy Prophet says: I am surprised of a Muslim that all his actions are good for him/her and this situation is only for believer who if something which is the reason for his happiness and loss, comes to him, tolerates and that is for his/her welfare and benefit.

Hazrat Abi Hurairah رضی الله عنه   has narrated from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be up on him):  The Holy Prophet said that Allah Tala says: “ When I take a beloved one of my believer slave of this world from him/her, and he/her just for the sake of my pleasure and hope of my reward, endures, I don’t have any other reward than Paradise “Bihisht”  for him/her.

Hazrat Abi Hurairah رضی الله عنه    has narrated from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be up on him) has said that whosoever Allah wants his/her welfare entangles him with calamity or misfortune   (examines him with difficulties.

There are many more verses of the Holy Qur’an and sayings of the Holy Prophet in this regard. All these verses of the Holy Qur’an and sayings of the Holy Prophet indicate that how much important patience and Sabr is in Islam. So by reading all teachings of Islam, we must be proud of our beloved religion Islam and should follow it’s teachings of it and practice in our life. By doing this, we will be successful both in this world and the world Hereafter.
