They had to keep inside their fury, their hate and their shame. They had to keep their head down even though they were the ones deserving respect, because even when they had nothing at all, they still had hope and they fought for their life at all costs. I think they helped to break up the scenes of abuse and heartache, making the novel more palatable to the reader. Bless the to-do list. Truly, as the novel wears on, the beauty of this is all the more evident as we see this starving, death-ridden community come together for the sake of keeping just one more person alive, of getting word from just one other person deported elsewhere. While being a very important book, one that I did connect with emotionally, it didn t quite hit me the same way other books set during World War 2 have. The resulting uncertainty highlights the problem of “orphan works” – works as to which it is very difficult, if not impossible, to establish ownership. Want to read more of my reviews? It can be claimed that the story of Andrius and Lina is a love story, but it is so much more than that. They pick each other up when they fall, they support each other, they give the other the strength to keep going. Needless to say, Between Shades of Gray touches upon a delicate and depressing subject matter, but this is, first and foremost, a story of hope and incredible strength. From the bald man with his dry, mean sense of humor, to the little children, to the women who were strong and determined. I didn t utter a sound.
