Sports, Illustrated: The Sartorial Argument for Sports Watches

Posted on at

You've probably noticed them on certain celebrities, models, and other fashion luminaries. Big, plastic, colorful, kind of like a yo-yo strapped to someone's wrist: such is the nature of the good old sports watch.

You might think to yourself, didn't I outgrow those when I left high school? Didn't we leave the Baby-Gs and Casios behind as we entered the new millenium?

Trust me, I've pondered the same things. I, too, was once extremely resistant to our new, rubber encased overlords. After all, this was supposed to be the era of decadent minimalism, your imaginary rich grandmother's Chopards and Cartiers.

And then I realized that I do not in fact have Chopard and Cartier money. And also that sports watches can have a much more subtle look these days than they did in the nineties. And also that they in fact complement the new sporty minimalist spring collections fantastically, contributing to the general futuristic Metropolis vibes.

Essentially, sports watches are fun, relatively inexpensive, and very modern looking. They may not fill the hole in my heart I have reserved for gold and diamond tour billion investment piece types, but for now, I can live with loving a little bit of plastic.
