The Founding of a German Political Party

Posted on at

On 5th January 1919 a German Nationalist named Anton Drexler formed a new political party. Originally intended to be called the "German Socialist Worker's Party" the socialist part of the name was objected to by Thule Society member and colleague Karl Harrer, so the name was changed to the German Workers' Party, at least initially.

Later that year, an Austrian of German extraction and winner of the Iron Cross in World War I was to be sent to infiltrate the party, but he found much there that he liked. The name of the infiltrator was Adolf Hitler. The political party is more commonly known as the Nazi Party.

One of the more unfortunate days in history.
