One such moment happened this past month when a six-year-old girl in Norfolk, Virginia stopped to help a crying homeless man in the street. After coming out of a store with her mom, Janiyah Lewis saw the homeless man crying and walked up to him and sparked up a conversation. The man was down on his luck and recently lost everything but he remained hopeful. Upon realizing that he didn’t have any food, Janiyah took a few dollars out of her purse, handed it to him and told him it would make her happy if he would treat himself to a meal on her. Perhaps she inspired kindness in those passing by because almost instantaneously two strangers followed suit and sent some change his way. It was this moment of pure, honest concern from a six-year-old girl that stands as an example to us all that kindness knows no color, boundaries, or limitations. His honesty to open up about the hardships he was facing, opened the door for an honest connection. Sometimes it takes a little six-year-old girl to remind us that being kind to others is part of what makes us citizens of humanity. Faust Act of Kindness Being honest when others don’t know is a true test of character. Will you return the extra change the cashier accidentally gave you? Will you take the time to return a lost object you found? Regardless of the situation that may arise, be mindful of being honest not because others will know if you weren’t, but because you will. Question of the Month They say that honesty is the best policy. How has being honest in a given situation proven to be just that? Share with us in the comments.
