What is Folliculitis?

Here is another skin disease that may be new to us because we never heard nor read about it before.

The Folliculitis is also a bacterial infection on the skin. This is commonly caused by bacteria called staphylococcus.

The infection will eventually develop a crust which involved the superficial part of the skin's follicular duct wherein the perifollicular presents red papules or pustules.

There are variable distribution of this disease on the skin but it is often found on the scalp, some are at the axillae and trunk while others are on legs and arms.

What are the treatments for Folliculitis?

Folliculitis can be treated in three simple ways. First, you must avoid or minimize the exposure of the infected portion with the friction, occlusion and most especially from the heat. The will aggravate the condition of the disease.

Second, you must clean the infected area with antibacterial soap and water. Then you have to apply cream or ointment like fusidate and mupirocin in the cleaned affected areas. This would be effective when the involved areas are only limited.

Third, for extensive cases of the disease, there are oral anti-staphylococcal antibiotics that can be prescribed. These are sodium fusidate, cloxacillin, cefuroxime and the oxacillin.

The skin disease can be avoided or prevented when we also make ourselves clean. We shall always observe cleanliness, good hygiene and proper sanitation not only with our body but also our environment.
