Zeeman Effect

Posted on at

“When Hydrogen atoms are placed in magnetic field, it splits into spectral line, this splitting is known as Zeeman effect”

                                      OR

“When a source of light is placed in magnetic field, a single line splits into many spectral lines, this is known as Zeeman effect.”

TYPES

There are two types of Zeeman effect.

1)      Normal Zeeman Effect

2)      Anamalous Zeeman Effect.

1)Normal Zeeman Effect:

The splitting of a single line into many spectral line in the presence of strong magnetic field, this type of Zeeman effect is known as Normal Zeeman Effect.

Types of Normal Zeeman Effect:

Normal Zeeman Effect is further divided into two types.

1)      Transverse Normal Zeeman Effect

2)      Longitudnal Normal Zeeman Effect

Transverse Normal Zeeman Effect:

A Zeeman effect in which the splitting of line is perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field is said to be Transverse Normal Zeeman Effect.

Longitudnal Normal Zeeman Effect:

When the splitting is along the direction of magnetic field or parallel to magnetic field, this type of Normal Zeeman effect is known as Longitudnal Normal Zeeman Effect.

3)      Anamalous Zeeman Effect;

The splitting of spectral lines observed in a weak magnetic field is said to be Anamalous Zeeman effect.
