Wikipedia has it's first appearance back around 1911, when photography was in its infancy.

There are many types of headshots and portraits that photographers can create, for artistic reasons, for business purposes (business profiles, model or acting comp cards) down to the amateur selfie, an unadvised form of representing yourself other than to close friends regarding your vacation updates.

I often see a neglect in using strong images to represent ones self mainly on Linkedin, which is very business oriented in its approach to connecting people. I believe it's a big mistake to simply use the camera on your laptop to create an image that showcases yourself to potential business opportunities and clients.

Our friends at CEOportrait - a NYC based photography and editing team are masters at portraying people in the best possible way, focusing strongly on the final audience the images are intended for. You can see in the attached images, models, business leaders, philanthropists, and celebrities. Each image was carefully staged, photographed and digitally enhanced with editing tools. By the way 99.9% of images in magazines are manipulated. So it's important to not photoshop you into a freak, but get the coloring perfect, and hell maybe remove a pimple.

So take the time to put your best self forward in the world of social media, and if you're in NYC look up the CEOportrait team to make you look like a superstar.

Oh and they do video as well...

08 2014 16:08:23 +0000"THE BOSS" - A Native Advertisement for Airtel India
As we move the platform in the direction of embracing more long form narrative advertising or what can be termed native advertisement or branded content, I happened upon this ad from Airtel India created by the Mumbai agency, Taproot India.

I'll let you watch "THE BOSS" to form your own conclusions, and would love to know if you were engaged to the end or do you find yourself getting bored with the story. I think it's quite easy to generally predict the direction of events, but I did watch to the end!

Last do you think you would be more inclined to look favorably upon Airtel for presenting their service in a spot like this? In general the belief in Womens Empowerment holds strong values within our platform and Taproot shoots, we believe successfully in that direction.

08 2014 15:20:26 +0000THE NOMINEES FOR BEST DIRECTOR AT THE LA JOLLA INTERNATIONAL FASHION FILM FESTIVAL
Here they are, the creators behind the best fashion films of 2013/2014 who have been nominated for the distinction of best director at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, which starts July 24th. We've already presented two blogs introducing the Best Film and Cinematography categories and if you did see those, there are some below that have been nominated multiple times.

Judging this category was a tremendous challenge as were the others. Picking a single winner took many hours and reviews, and I still would like to see multiple Directors take the stage when the envelope is opened. As in sports, we don't believe in ties, what fun is that, one winner will emerge, and I picked ........... ..... (fat chance!)The directors continue to up their game in every aspect of story, production and casting and I thank them for delivering spot on this year.

Also a special thanks to Fred Sweet and his team who go through 100's of films to get to this list below. I have the pleasure of being one of the judges for a second year, thanks to Fred Sweet, the festival's producer. When I received the ballot sheet this year from San Diego, I was floored by the level of quality that was curated in each of the 14 awards categories, and the difficulty in choosing just 1 winner.

Attached in this blog are films from YouTube and Vimeo, thanks to the new embedding feature that our superstar developers just implemented for the Film Annex users to share video content from these off site platforms. It's a great feature that I will certainly take advantage of as I hope you do! In the end the goal is still for these content creators to be part of the Film Annex and Models WebTV networks.

Listed below are 2013's Best Film nominations. Here's your opportunity to be a judge yourself and make your picks and share with the world. I made mine but I'll hold off on letting anyone know until the actual winners are announced on July 27th.

Four other films that I cannot present in this blog, as their directors still have them under wraps, are SMOKE, THE OLD ROAD, MERCADO DE LAGRIMAS, and KISS OF THE SIREN. I can assure you that they are fantastic and making a decision on who should be the winner of best film cannot be made without having the opportunities to watch these films in the future.

RHIÉ 2014- THE PURGATORY OF MONOTONY

RANGEEN

HONOR SPRING 2014 FILM

SNAKE

K WOMAN

“Today, Tonight” by Fred & Nick with The Kooples

Shadow and Light

JENNI KAYNE- WINTER 2013

07 2014 10:33:21 +0000Jessica Milan Presents Lookbook Cookbook - Amazing Food, Fashion & Photography (All Vegan Too!)
We would like to introduce to our community a very talented photographer and model Jessica Milan. We have met brilliant online publishers who rely on strong images to back up the written word of their articles. A picture truly is worth a thousand words and is the first thing to draw the eye of the reader. The problem many of these artists and entrepreneurs have contended with on a daily basis is monetizing their photo editorial efforts, when it came to making these images shoppable.

ShoppingCartTechnologies, without getting much into the IT of it, has essentially revolutionized the world of online publishing, empowering the publisher, brand and I'd say most importantly the reader who the former want to turn into a consumer. SCT does this by creating and elegant shoppable image experience for the reader with real-time inventory updates (nothing out of stock), access to unlimited brands for the publisher to choose from, and a seamless point of purchase so the consumer can stay on the publishers page whether they buy one item from one brand, or ten items from ten different brands.

This in effect makes all parties happy. The brand has more opportunity for sales, the publisher has an increased revenue stream from sales from its more engaged reader, and the reader/consumer stays on the desired publishers web page with no skipping around to purchase items all over the internet. SCT does all the thinking and leg work to make for an enjoyable and seamless shopping experience.

So to summarize I'll leave you with the benefits that using SCT will provide to a publisher, brand and reader:

New Revenue Stream for publisher & brands (Yes $$ is needed to keep the lights on)

Instant gratification for the reader. Happy reader, more sales = Happy Publisher & Brand

No reader re-direction to make a purchase from the image = more minutes spent on the publishers domain

The publisher only presents shoppable editorial due to SCT technology that scours the brands inventory in near real time

SCT is a turnkey solution and hassle free for all involved

On the tech side, and as I never worked with them, but understand now that no need for API's to make all this happen is HUGE to not deal with

SCT launched May 14, 2014 to rave reviews. As the team left our offices last night we said the next time they stop by will be for their IPO. When that happens, we'll invite you the celebration.

Watch The Video:

05 2014 10:18:26 +0000MIT Bitcoin Club to Distribute BTC to 4528 Students Fall 2014 Following the Lead of Film Annex
The world of Bitcoin may change forever this fall with today's news from the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Bitcoin Club. This is a POWERFUL development for the Bitcoin community of which I am a part of along with Film Annex.

Jeremy Rubin ( @JeremyRubin ), a sophomore studying computer science at MIT, and Dan Elitzer ( @delitzer ), founder and President of the MIT Bitcoin Club and a first-year in the MBA program at MIT Sloan are the catalysts behind this initiative; " “Giving students access to crypto-currencies is analogous to providing them with internet access at the dawn of the internet era,” said Rubin. When the distribution happens this fall, it will make the MIT campus the first place in the world where it will be possible to assume widespread access to Bitcoin" - (The bold is not exactly true, more in a bit). I am very much looking forward to the potential innovations that these students, some of the brightest minds on the planet, may come up with from the challenges they encounter on a daily basis in terms of payment applications and more specifically storage of their Bitcoin. Possibly each student will get a Blockchain wallet, an amazing tool for daily spending/storage of Bitcoin. I would like to see innovation in cold storage for bigger amounts of crypto currencies that would be seamless in allowing usage without having to worry about hacking and also many trips to a safe deposit box for the codes. My experience with Bitcoin only made sense while I worked through the different situations that actually owning a Bitcoin allowed me to encounter (payments - storage - trading) and through valuable conversations with Mike Sweeney ( @MikeSweeney ) who found solutions to many of my BTC needs first. So a like minded community of young mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and MBA candidates along with the MIT professors and supporting staff collaborating on one topic, Bitcoin, will most certainly create at least one innovation or new business. Maybe 100 innovations, the world will soon find out.

So back to the bold section above: A few weeks ago Film Annex attended the Inside Bitcoin conference in New York City's Jacob Javitz center, featuring some of the top players in all aspects of the digital currency, including trading, mining, storing, and media/publishing distribution.

Film Annex who represented the last of that list was unique in its presence at the event as they were the sole attendee that was actually distributing Bitcoin since February 1st 2014 to 300,000+ content creators around the world for their activity writing blogs, uploading video content and actively sharing this work through social media! Film Annex was the first to do this for creative empowerment for a large community WITH BITCOIN. They've already successfully done this for 6 years with the US dollar through Paypal. Now it's peer to peer Bitcoin payments have gone around the world seamlessly in countries such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, and MANY more. This are some of the countries data;

MIT, we will be tremendous advocates of your project and invite you to join us on Film Annex to share your stories and videos that we're sure will be created as the Fall semester gets underway and 4528 students ask the simple question when they see a balance of $100 in their Blockchain wallet, "Now what?" Those simple two words may spark the next big innovation to change the BTC world.

--

For further info on powerful BTC articles click here for a great blog on the crypto-currency.

And watch a fantastic interview shot at the Film Annex studio with Fereshteh Forough and Nic Cary, founder of Blockchain.

04 2014 13:15:08 +0000THE FORCE ~ New Fashion Editorial by Photographer Tomaas
We're thrilled to get an update from fashion photographer Tomaas and the opportunity to share his latest fashion editorial he shot title "The Force". When we saw the mini thumbnails to the images we knew it was going to be another brilliant vision from this outstanding photographer. What was surprising ( in a delightful way) was the model.

Tomaas usually shoots some of the world's top models and this is no different, but we'll guess that this model, Marta Krylova, is no more than 11. Quite a different approach in casting than what we typically see, but with perfect execution nonetheless. We'll safely say watch out Vogue, theirs a young lady who'll be knocking on your door in a decade for that cover!

CREDITS

Photographer: TOMAAS
Fashion Stylist: Carlton Jones
Makeup Artist: Sabrina Ziomi
Hair: Niko Weddle
Post-Production: Elena Levenets & TOMAAS
Model: Marta Krylova

Tie dyed cape - JOSE DURAN
Skirt - ERIN BARR

Ace Dress - FEMME d'ARMES
Ring - LARUICCI

Crown - SUGAR SCOUT
Dress - TITANIA INGLES
Leather Gauntlet - sGEORGINE

Jersey Dress - LAUREN BAGLIORE

Silk Dress-LIE SANG BONG

Lace Cape and Dress - HOUGHTON

04 2014 12:16:49 +0000Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia SS 14/5 is Live on Models WebTV #MBFWA
The full collection of runway shows from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia Spring/Summer 2014/2015 collections can be viewed here. It was a simple recon mission to see what's brewing on the shelves of my favorite shop in NYC. Of course, the Strand crew are very good at promoting the best and brightest in their collection. 1st Edition, signed Hemingway's or Fitzgerald's are locked up due to their $1000 + price tags, and really not the objective, but are fun pieces of history to behold. My eye is on the rare photo books which are a passion of mine to collect and Strand has some great ones in a constantly changing stock.

BRUCE DAVIDSON PHOTOGRAPHS East 100th St. circa 1968

This time they hooked me with an inscribed 1st edition "Bruce Davidson - Photographs" which was perfectly displayed for me to focus on the second I got off the elevator. Flipping through the book, I knew immediately this would be a great addition to my collection, and will certainly hold it's value in the years ahead. As Henry Geldzahler writes in the forward, "Without preconceptions, or a carefully constructed world-view Bruce Davidson recognizes authenticity. He is no moralist; he does not consciously judge. He penetrates the situations to which he is drawn, and in doing so, is compassionate."BROOKLYN GANG 1959

The coolest part of this purchase besides the ability to get very acquainted with the incredible work that Bruce Davidson represents on his journeys around the world, especially in New York City was who this particular book was inscribed to in 1990, Harvey Zucker.

Inscription to Harvey Zucker

Harvey, I learned was a legend in the New York book scene. He was the owner of A Photographer's Place on Mercer Street just north of SOHO. Barry Tanenbaum sheds fantastic light on this man in his article for Shutterbug in 1999. When I read it I realized that way back when I stopped in this place across from NYU's gym. It was a fantastic little shop that carried many great titles, focused on everything photography.

Simply owning a signed copy of "Photographs by Bruce Davidson" would have made my day for the beautiful work he captured. The added bonus that this was a signed copy from a legend in photography to a legend in the very unfortunately dying world of niche book store owner makes me feel I've taken hold of a very cool piece of New York City history!

03 2014 14:43:38 +0000JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z
JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

JeYxE1HCNvNl9Em7Xs2z

03 2014 12:41:12 +0000Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week NYC Autumn Winter 2014 Image and Video Resource
We've included below a selection of images and the corresponding video links for many of the 2014 Autumn/Winter Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week runway shows that just took place at the newly revamped and exclusive Lincoln Center venue. Industry gurus have already headed to London, leaving New York streets a little more boring in terms of color and style. The weather in the Big Apple decided to say “buy” to the fashion week in its usual snowy way. No more fashion obsession, no more photographers on the streets. Back to reality. No, back to work! We need to digest everything that we’ve seen on the New York runways and then present it to the customers and readers in our stores and magazine editorials. Endless process… It was indeed a great week! This season we were lucky to watch so many amazing collections. The most notable features of the New York runways were the abundance of textures, gorgeous palette of different pastel and neutral shades, various minimalistic silhouettes and asymmetries.

Who did we like the most? Hard to say. All of the fashion insiders have their own preferences depending on their personal style and the style of the company they work for (which most of the times are the correlated concepts and bad for them, if not).

I personally enjoyed the perfect color palette of the finest wool and cashmere from The Row, the crazy game of prints and volumes at Proenza Schouler, and, being a girl who wants to be a princess, I fell in love with the Scottish motifs in the collection of Marchesa ‘s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.

I would also mention charming sunny collection of 3.1 Phillip Lim, anniversary collection of BCBG Max Azria and always-elegant Victoria by Victoria Beckham, my long time favorite.

Who else… The debut collection of Jason Wu for Hugo Boss proved that the designer was more than the right choice for the classical German brand as Wu was able to keep its tailored menswear spirit and smartly apply it to the women’s line. I didn’t see a lot of Jason Wu in the collection, but I felt a lot of Hugo Boss in it, and this is amazing for the first collection.Alexander Wang was just something beyond reality. The strategy that the designer had this season can be described as “be different, think outside of the box, break the boundaries…” The show and the collection itself widened the gigantic creativity of Alexander Wang (my colleagues from Russia even called me to ask if models were actually girls or boys…) Remarkable collection; it was definitely worth leaving the island. In fact, we sometimes forget how amazing it is to watch the beauty of Manhattan from across the river. We should thank Alexander Wang for reminding us. And what could have been a better final accord than the Marc Jacobs show? Only the Marc Jacobs show under the cloudy sky. Chick, light and transparent collection was just like the clouds above us. Simply, the best possible closing ceremony. Can't wait to use these pieces in our photo shoots. I guess the magazines war for them will be tough.

After everything that happened in New York, it will be not easy for London to surprise the public. Lets wait what the British capital has to offer. -KG

-

CLICK TO WATCH THE MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK A/W14 WEB TV
02 2014 12:02:22 +0000Outside the Runway. The growing trend of cultural, ethical, and environmental responsibility among fashion brands.
By: Ksenniya Grisé

Realizing its influence and power, fashion industry takes a great part in supporting and developing the world around us. Art, music, and architecture, as being the closest relatives of fashion have probably received more attention than any other industries.

Recently in the news there have been several interesting reports of how fashion brands spread their creativity.

Italian fashion giant Prada, which is widely known for active support of art, has recently announced its project of financing the restoration of famous Renaissance “The Last Supper” by Giorgio Vasari, which has been under restoration for more than 4 years now, since it was damaged during the Florentine flood of 1966. Restoration works have been curated by the National Trust of Italy, a non-profit organization that protects and preserves cultural and historical heritage of the country and which is also a long partner of Milanese fashion house. Together they have been restoring and refurbishing pieces of art all around the country – from Bologna to Bari.

But attention of many fashion brands goes far beyond art and culture. For example, creative directors of Kenzo Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have drawn attention of the public to the sea problems in their Conscious Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Designers have placed strong statements such as “No Fish, No Nothing” on their runway pieces, used a lot of marine colors and prints with different kinds of fish.

Now, by joining forces with the marine conservation charity Blue Marine Foundation, Kenzo is raising the awareness about the problems of the sea world among the fashion lovers.

“The protection of marine life is essential for the development of all life. These are great examples of how fashion steps down the runways and becomes truly social. If you are influential and powerful your voice is very likely to be heard. Let’s hope that the global trend of cultural, ethical and environmental fashion responsibility will continue to grow and will lead to even more positive changes in future.

WATCH PARIS FASHION WEEK KENZO SPRING SUMMER 2014 FASHION SHOW #PFW

02 2014 12:18:24 +0000Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - The Unique Season in a Unique City
BY: Ksenniya Grisé

It seems that the weather God does not like fashion. Many ladies have decided to conquer the severe New York winter by wearing sandals and summer dresses. Not sure if this even looks logical (winter and summer fashion are two different things, no?)

All in all, everything looks like the usual scenario of the February fashion week in the Big Apple. But there are so many things that make it so special. This season is very remarkable in many ways. The new approach to the organization of the fashion week by IMG Fashion indeed makes this event more private and closed. Despite the crowd in front of the Lincoln Center and all other locations, inside of the venues you feel professionalism and concentration. You really have this feeling “we are here because we work in the fashion industry and we came here for business”, which is amazing. Yes, we all cannot live without our iPhones during the shows, but this is the reality of the modern era, this is how we now do our job – social media dictates the rules. Scheduling was tough and many of us couldn't visit all the shows that were planned for one day, but we all must admit that a lot of efforts were put in making it well structured.

But putting the organizational moments aside, this winter is still very special. We have been lucky to watch two anniversary shows – Donna Karan and BCBG. With Donna Karan we were celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the New York woman, chick and elegant. All the looks as well as the whole space of the Wall Street venue reflected the spirit of the brand. There was nothing groundbreaking in the collection. But this is what we love Donna Karan for – for being true to herself and to her New York woman.

Max and Lubov Azria reinvented many of their iconic techniques for BCBG’s twenty-fifth anniversary collection. As with Donna Karan, here we saw what we were expecting to see – layers, color blocking, asymmetry. Very smooth and eye catching collection – exactly how it needed to be.

This season already brought us a lot of amazing collections and many great performances. We will definitely discuss all of them as soon as the fashion week comes to an end. So far, sometimes I thought that the organization of one particular show was better than the collection itself, sometimes vice versa – collection would have looked a lot better with a different ambiance. But we can judge and compare and this is what makes fashion week so great.

There are two more days to come. This time, I’d like to focus on the consumer and the different target markets that exists here—all from personal observation—from having been based back in Singapore for a year.

The Customers- Expats and Locals
Known to be a city state with 30% of foreigners who live here, Singapore, like any other city, is quite cosmopolitan. As the saying goes, albeit untrue, is that there are “no poor people in Singapore.” Walking down the streets, you might think this is true. You will hardly see a beggar on the streets here, particularly in the Central Business District or main shopping areas.

Through personal observation, the smaller businesses in the fashion industry who act as distributors or retailers to this market tend to segment the market between expatriates and locals. From different retailers such as Inverted Edge, which carries over 50 brands from the APAC region to Australian fashion retailer, WyldShop, a large proportion of our customers are expatriates or Singaporeans who have lived overseas before. This might be due to the expats having more eclectic tastes and also being less price oriented. Of course, exceptions do exist and I am speaking in general terms.
So where do the locals shop?Well, in terms of online businesses, the “blogshop” phenomena, a term used by the locals here, is where most Singaporeans choose to do their shopping. So much so that some of these shops have opened retail spaces.

One such popular blogstore, which I recall existed as a livejournal site, taking orders via comments is Tracyeinny. Today, the store has 4 retail locations and has also been awarded the Successful Entrepreneur - Gold Category, by GRC Press Holdings, even buying bus ads as part of their media campaign.

With price points that average between $28 for a dress to ‘lifestyle’ items such as a phone case (wildly popular in Asia) for $6, Tracyeinny’s attractive price points have lured in the local Singaporean market. Often, these items are sourced from Taiwan, Korea, Thailand and/or China. Great for those with an average or petite body, the downside of these shops is the lack of sizing for bigger bodies and the quality that comes with the price. Fortunately, this is not an issue for the local population. Other similar blogshops can be found online, and offline as well in heartland malls (local neighborhoods catered to the community settled in that area) and Fareast Plaza, a mall at Orchard Road.

Nonetheless, the idea of fast fashion is one that the Asian mass market is obsessed with, and does not seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon.
What does this mean?

Consumers currently pay attention to the accessories in a luxury business- from small leather goods, handbags, watches and shoes. This can be seen with many popular luxury re-sellers or discounted sites, such as Reebonz and Kepris to name a few.

I would hope that as the fashion market in Singapore matures, more will take towards supporting emerging and most importantly, local designers from their country and region. Today though, in the mass market, apparel is still not seen as an ‘investment’ piece to be bought from a luxury store or even within the contemporary market to the average consumer.
02 2014 16:14:00 +0000Sport and Fashion. Story of a Big Love Affair.
BY: Ksenniya Grise

The luxury and sport industries have been in a love affair for many years. Close, almost intimate relationships help them to extend their influence, reach out to new audiences and share ideas and innovations in terms of production and design. More than that, their love helped us to stop sacrificing style for comfort. If we think back 10-15 years, sport and fashion were not such lovers. Sportswear was boring and attracted mostly people in need for comfortable (read: not beautiful) clothes for their gym sessions.
Now times have changed. Sportswear has turned to be a fashion trend. I am wearing sneakers with my favorite Celine bag and my boyfriend wears his sneakers paired with a tailored suit and we both feel great.
The same thing happened inside the gyms. Now, looking at all these amazing sport collections you simply cannot look bad during your yoga or dance classes.
Fashion has brought aesthetics to the sportswear industry; sport has broadened fashion’s profile. It is a win-win situation. Now we cannot think of fashion without thinking of sport. Almost every second picture of the street style stars is a sportswear inspired look. New Balance is now a must-have the same way as a classic Chanel 2.55.There are many examples of how high profile fashion designers express their love to sportswear giants. We all remember unions of Stella McCartney or Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 and Adidas, which are now considered one of the most commercially successful collaborations between fashion and sportswear brands. More than that, almost a lifetime partnership of Stella McCartney and Adidas is shown every season at the London Fashion Week, which once again proves the worldwide obsession over the stylish sportswear.
Among other famous partnerships are Alexander McQueen and Puma, Rei Kawakubo and Speedo, Junya Watanabe, Kawakubo's protégé, and Fred Perry, Marc Jacobs and Vans, John Varvatos and Converse. All of them turned out to be quite successful.

Now, as designers realize that sportswear has a greater global impact than luxury fashion, more and more of them show their interest in sportswear brands. Think of the recent Raf Simons and Rick Owens projects for Adidas or the collection of Riccardo Tisci for Nike, which is already launched and will soon be available in Nike stores.

FASHION WEEK RICK OWENS SPRING SUMMER 2014 FASHION SHOW #PFWAs time goes by and our life and therefore our everyday style becomes less and less formal, sportswear in many its variations occupies a big space in our closets. How great it is to be stylish and feel comfortable at the same time.

02 2014 15:47:20 +0000Haute Couture ⎮ When Fashion Stops Being a Tough Business and Becomes a True Art
BY: Ksenniya Grisé

Major fashion cities have long been fighting for the status of the world’s fashion capital, but there has always been and always will be only one, whose history and heritage made it the proud owner of the desired title. Paris.

Since the days of Versailles and Marie Antoinette, French capital has been the place where fashion was born and spread across the world. CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE

In the beginning of the 18th century women from all over Europe came to Paris in search for a perfect dress, and the city, with its greatest and the most famous tailors and the finest quality fabrics and accessories, had a lot to offer. But for the wealthiest ones that was not enough. These women wanted to be special and have something that no one else had. Feeling the need for a more personal approach, Charles Frederick Worth opened up a fashion atelier, which became the first haute couture house. Now after several fittings ladies became owners of a true work of art – a very special, made-to-measure, one of a kind dress made out of the best possible materials. This is how the era of haute couture began. Soon there were more than hundred ateliers across Paris that specialized in custom-made orders.

Evening dress, ca. 1887 Charles Frederick Worth (French, born England, 1825–1895) Silk, glass, metallic thread

Many years have passed. And though the concept of haute couture remained the same, the market has changed dramatically.

Realizing the power of haute couture, many brands around the globe started to overuse and exhaust the term by applying it to everything from perfume to accessories. Eventually its meaning and high status has depreciated.

In order to stop the worldwide couture epidemic, Paris government found the solution in establishing a special association that would oversee the entire industry in the country, The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Haute Couture became a “legally protected and controlled label that can only be used by those fashion houses, which have been granted the designation by the French Ministry of Industry”. The list of the proud owners of the title is reviewed annually.

By 2014 the number of official couture houses has dropped to less than twenty and the women’s clientele also significantly decreased and changed. They say now there are less than 2,000 customers worldwide. And these women are mostly from the rich Eastern countries – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. But sixteen greatest haute couture houses spending thousands of hours and hundreds of meters of the finest fabric on one haute couture collection to have a possibility to sell it to 2,000 women, does that sound paradoxical?

In fact, not at all. When we talk about haute couture we are not talking about financial profit, we are talking about craftsmanship, exclusivity and creation of something truly unique and special, something that would last forever and have a mark in the history of fashion.

Putting so many efforts into one couture collection leads to much greater results, to something that is above all the money on Earth – to recognition, prestige and respect. This is a long-term investment, and the profit comes after as the success of the brand’s haute couture show will eventually lead to financial profit of selling its ready-to-wear collection. Ulyana Sergeenko

The haute couture fashion week this year continues to uphold and proclaim Paris as the worlds fashion capital. I am very proud to see Russian name in the list. Ulyana Sergeenko did an amazing job, their Oriental Express collection has the Russian spirit just how we, Russians, love it.

And even though models at this season’s Chanel show were wearing sneakers, I still consider haute couture a very royal form of fashion, and amazingly beautiful dresses – its prerogative. Thanks God there are Elie Saab and Valentino, who share my views. Their fairytale-like dresses turned this event into fashion heaven, exactly what haute couture is supposed to be.Photo: Valentino

--

More Paris Fashion
01 2014 10:35:19 +0000Fashion Photography Dubai - Mazen Aburour Shoots DOUBLE IMPACT for HAYA Magazine
We're excited to share Dubai based fashion photographer Mazen Abusrour's latest editorial that he shot for HAYA Magazine titled DOUBLE IMPACT.

As told to me by Jonathan Morgan, Mazens right hand man and star fashion model:
"These amazing images are the collaboration of Mazen's vision of vanity and Mo Al Falasi's styling ideas. Mo approached Mazen with the idea of shooting clothes with metallic accents, which Mazen found intriguing. Always on the lookout for new locations, Mazen heard about a new beauty parlor where many wealthy women were going for treatments. This immediately got Mazen thinking about vanity, and people's never-ending quest for beauty.

Stylist Mo Al Falasi was lucky enough to secure the location for the shoot, and as soon as the last customers were out the door, the team moved in and started setting up. Shooting one model is one thing, but make-up and styling on two models in the confines of the beauty salon meant the shoot went late into the night. The team pushed through and 8 hours later the shoot wrapped. Customer returned to the salon the next day, completely unaware that a high-fashion editorial shoot had taken place just hours before."

The end of this month is quite exciting for Mazen as he will be off to shoot an editorial for a BIG publication somewhere on this planet :) that we'll share with you once the green light is given. Luxury brands and media giants all wanted to conquer China and were struggling for the attention of 1.3 billion, yet unsophisticated, consumers and readers. But when entering such unusual market as China, one should be very careful in choosing the right strategy and method of communication.

Chinese luxury market is as unique as the country itself. With its great history and heritage, with its enormous pace of development and specific taste, China doesn’t look like any other county in the world. Chinese market is growing according to its own scenario, surprising and astonishing fashion gurus from the established markets of Europe and the U.S. What works in the West is not likely to work in the East. That said, some brands became extremely successful and grew their capital up to two-three times, others failed with no second chance.

Vogue China belongs to the group of the lucky ones. But success of Vogue in the Celestial Empire is not the matter of luck – it is the result of huge work.

Before publishing its first issue back in 2005, Vogue’s team spent three years researching the market and its target audience – Chinese woman of the new era, inexperienced, fashion-hungry, willing to learn and experiment. As a result the first two issues were “swept off” from the newsstands after three days of sales. And though the magazine now stay at the kiosks for more than that, Vogue China, which became the sixteenth edition of internationally published Vogue versions, is still the most commercially successful. So successful, that it is published 16 times a year in order to accommodate all its advertisers and 1,2 million readers.

But enough numbers, they are only the representation of the success. What is the reason behind it? Vogue in China is literally a Fashion Bible. It opens up the world of global fashion to the Asian women and then tells them what to do with it. Chinese Vogue “explains” fashion to its readers and educates them in the first place.

Studying fashion business in Shanghai for about a year, I witnessed the Vogue-mania myself. For thousands of women in China, Vogue has become a coffee table book. It is “cool and trendy” to buy Vogue; it shows that you are interested in fashion and that you are willing to explore the West with all its beauty and glamour.

Angelica Cheung, who has been shaping the pages of Vogue China since the first issue, became an ambassador of Western fashion in the Asian region. Her smart “blend” of all the best that the Western market has to offer with what the Asian market is willing to accept – is the foundation of the magazine’s success. Angelica Cheung and her team collaborate with the best stylists, models and photographers of the industry; and her collaboration with Mario Testino has become somewhat of a legendary.

Now as Chinese market is becoming more diverse, sophisticated and multi-layered, as the growth rate of the luxury market is slowing down and as Chinese consumers change their taste and preferences in luxury fashion, Vogue has the new task – adapt to the quick changes and stay at the top of the Asian fashion scene.

---

Top Chinese Model Jerry Fu discusses his career with Gwen Lu in the Models WebTV studio.

01 2014 11:32:45 +0000The Fashion Tiers: Where would you like to play in Singapore?
by: Nicole Tan

Over the course of this blog post and the next, I will be writing and dissecting my learnings from working a year in the fashion industry in Singapore. On my recent trip back to New York, many had asked me how the fashion scene (or if there was any at all) was like in Singapore. To be honest, I was expecting more.

From an industry level, I had anticipated higher creativity and drive. On a consumer level, I expected for lack of a better word, better taste and support. Perhaps I expected too much.

For those who’d like to get to know or have a basic understanding of where Singapore’s fashion industry stands currently, here are the main players from a retail perspective:

1. Fashion e-commerce? Are you from Zalora?

Mention the term Fashion e-commerce and immediately, Zalora will be a company and topic of conversation you cannot avoid. Zalora, for those who are unaware, is an e-commerce giant funded by Rocket Internet that has $238 million of funding in their name. Many have dubbed them the ASOS of South East Asia. They are known for their very, very aggressive SEO marketing.2. The three major retailers/ distributors to know in Singapore in the luxury business are Club 21, F J Benjamin and Valiram Group

Club 21 is infamous for their mother-daughter ultra-high net worth clientele—distributing and holding several exclusive rights to brands like 3.1 Philip Lim, Dries Van Noten, Comme des Garcons, Mulberry, Bao Bao, Issey Miyake… (you get the idea).

F J Benjamin offers a more eclectic range from Givenchy, Goyard, Tom Ford to mass retail brands such as GAP, Guess and their own label, Raoul, which is probably one of Singapore’s most known brand internationally.

Valiram Group owns the distribution of Hermes, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Tumi and also brands at very accessible price points such as Charles & Keith (of which LVMH owns a stake in) and Victoria’s Secret.

3. On the undercurrent, if you’re a local designer or are interested in checking out the local/ regional scene: Blueprint, Workshop Element (W.E) and Inverted Edge are all worthy of checking out.

Blueprint was started by Tracy Philips, once the Marketing Manager at Zouk (Singapore’s oldest and most established nightclub), and is currently one of the better trade shows to showcase design talents of this region for potential export opportunities.

Workshop Element, on the other hand, was started by Alfie Leong who also owns the label A.W.O.L. It is a collective that bands local fashion designers together, and currently exists as a pop-up retail space in West Gate Mall located in Jurong till February.

In the online space (and I’ll admittedly call out my possible biasness), Inverted Edge is a multibrand fashion e-commerce store that curates a collection of designers based in the Asia Pacific. Discover designers on Inverted Edge through their profiles, videos and/or inspiration boards.

4. Fast fashion or high street fashion brands : Wing Tai Asia is your best friend.

Into Uniqlo, Topshop and other UK brands such as Miss Selfridges, WAREHOUSE, Dorothy Perkins and Ben Sherman? Wing Tai Asia is the distributor. Aside from retail, the company also holds commercial and residential property. They are also the creators of what I would call one of Singapore’s most popular loyalty card: the F3 Community (everyone who grew up in Singapore is bound to have a membership)-- I still have, and use, mine.

5. Media, models and the rest

Currently, there are no notable PR agencies that deal specifically or by majority in fashion (ie. KCD, PR Consulting and their equivalents do not (yet) exist). The concept of showrooms, market week or market appointments are still terms that are unheard of. Fashion media instead borrow clothes directly from retailers or distributors.

The major media publications in fashion are owned via licenses, and are either under Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) or Mediacorp, both instituitions regulated by the Media Development Authority (MDA).

In terms of talent, sourcing runway models of international quality is still an issue that urgently needs to be resolved (especially considering the rates agencies quote).

The two major fashion weeks that occur in Singapore are the Audi Fashion Festival and FIDé Fashion Weeks. One show is clearly more organized than the other, and can be clearly identified by the crowd. The most concerning, however, is the lack of international media editors and buyers, both locally and internationally.Alas, the fashion industry in Singapore is very, very new. Menswear has become a priority for many luxury and fashion brands of Europe and the U.S. since about 2012, when the growth of this market segment has first outstripped womenswear, a longtime prerogative of the fashion world, by almost a double. Since then we have noticed a lot of changes. First of all, fashion brands concentrated their attention on their men’s lines by opening boutiques and flagship stores for men only. Established menswear brands like Brioni decided to extend and broaden their lines. London has launched its own series of men’s fashion shows. Even the street style photographs are now equally divided in ratio between men’s and women’s shots.

This year the obsession about the menswear has continued with even more fervor. As men’s fashion weeks were about to start fashion editors, journalist and buyers by tradition approved their schedules and booked tickets to London, Florence, Milan and Paris respectively. But not traditionally, this year they had to choose which event they want to see more.

The Spring/Summer 2014 season showed us an open and obvious competition between the two most important events on the menswear fashion calendar - London Collections: Men and Pitti Uomo. The two-day overlapping schedules not only amazed and shocked the fashion public, but also caused a lot of inconvenience.

Though been hosting men’s fashion week only for the fourth time, London has become very powerful on the international men’s fashion arena. But there is no need for LC: M to compete with almost half a century history of Florentine Pitti Uomo. For many representatives of the fashion world the two showcases are on different ends of the pole as LC: M and Pitti have completely different style and format, and they attract “different” public.

Historically, Pitti, being the first stop of the international menswear fashion “tour” is a trade fair that attracts mostly buyers from all around the globe. Booths, presentations, business cards exchange, thousands of meters of fabrics are all the traditional parts of the Pitti trade fair. London, on the opposite, is a traditional fashion show, with runways, dinners, parties and pre-parties.

Pitti Uomo is an Italian style parade. Nowhere is the world you are able to watch such enormous amount of perfectly dressed men as in Florence two times a year. Street fashion at Pitti has become somewhat of a trademark. London with its attention to street fashion is not at this stage yet.

If we dig dipper we might see the reason of such tension underneath it all. For many centuries Italy and England both have that unique style when it comes to men’s fashion. Preciously tailored suites, perfect color combinations, pocket square. But even here there is a difference. London with its main Burberry show is the representation of British chick and its cultural landscape. Florence still stays loyal to its Italian classics.Of course there can only be one winner, but this is not a competition. We all should understand that. The same way the womenswear fashion capitals has divided their credentials; London and Florence should stay focused on their own unique features.

01 2014 12:09:41 +0000Naomi Christie Fashion Photography - WILD HEART for DISfunkshion Magazine Featuring Hanna Beth
We know and admire Naomi Christie primarily as a filmmaker, who has shared 3 of her beautiful Southern California inspired fashion films with us on her WebTV; "Wanderlust", "Escape", and "Rose et Bleu". Her Fashion Photography though is something that cannot be overlooked as it's brilliant and constantly inspires us to ask ourselves in the studio, why do we freeze our butts off in NYC when these stunning beaches and back drops that Naomi takes advantage of in much of her photography are only a quick flight away. Naomi discusses Wild Heart starring Hanna Beth:

"My inspiration for this shoot was the natural earthy feel of the beach during the winter. Things are less vibrant but still so enchanting. I wanted a mystifying bewitching vibe - a dark paradise if you will. I love the dark clothing contrasting the white sand and pastel skies in this shoot.

I first worked with DISfunkshion by collaborating with editor and creator, Hugette to deliver a short film that embodies the magazine. After directing Wanderlust, I talked to Hugette about a spread on social media queen, Hanna Beth, who I met on a music video shoot. Hugette is an inspiring and hardworking woman and she features a lot of influential women in her magazine and I wanted to contribute!

I have this little secret spot in Malibu that I stumbled upon one time- there's a wooden swing set and tiki hut. I wanted to use it for a shoot so bad and thought this was the perfect opportunity. My team and I had quite a nice time enjoying the beach as our office for the day."CREDITS: Wild Heart by @NaomiChristie starring Hanna Beth for DISfunkshion Magazine @DISfunkshion_

Hair: Heather Locker

Makeup: Synda Salazar

Stylist: Morgan Ryan

Please Visit Naomi's WebTV to view her beautiful Fashion Films including WANDERLUST.

01 2014 16:52:39 +0000Time to Figure Your Schedule For Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014 Collection Shows
Here we are again, New York City. Some want to write them off the fashion week claiming they have turned this much respected and closed event “into a zoo”, some tend to protect them stating they have become an essential piece of the fashion puzzle, which we can not ignore any more.

The next fashion week is on its way to New York. And so are the changes…

We all remember Catherine Bennett's, Senior VP of IMG Fashion, statement that this season only the “carefully selected industry professionals” will have the chance to see the show beneath the door of the Lincoln Center. The debate is still raging as to whether these “back to basics” tactics will eventually return fashion week to its luxurious status.

Many fashion insiders have long considered current Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week a carnival. Maybe it is at some point, but I personally still think that fashion week itself is the most important platform for fashion business insiders to get together and to exchange knowledge, ideas and get inspiration for the following season. It is about “showcasing vision” as was once correctly put. But what is even more important – fashion week is about exploring new talents and names.

I must agree that “blogger” has become somewhat of an insulting word these days. But being a blogger does not mean that you are simply posting thousand of pictures of yourself on your free account and discourse about the ups and down of the fashion world. Many fashion bloggers are young industry professional that have obtained a strong voice in the world of fashion and who eventually are more important for the business than some editors and buyers, as they are more closely connected to the end consumer through their Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages. As a result, a lot of fashion bloggers are the ones who are dictating the trends. Looking at them and analyzing their style is now number one priority for many buyers.

Bloggers, as the representation of the Young and Creative class, should stay part of the fashion week on the same rights as the young, emerging designers, who are given the opportunity to show their talent to the world and be recognized and heard. Fashion week gives the opportunity to many young designers to open up to the world and be able to attract attention of sponsors and potential investors. Why should this very industry ignore fashion bloggers who also have much to say?

There are many other people except for the bloggers who turned the New York fashion week into a carnival these years. There should be a more strict control of who are the people who eventually get the tickets to the shows.

In many ways bloggers are the future of the fashion business, they are the representation of the new era, of the digital age and the power of social media, though not all the industry admits this fact. Fashion week has the responsibility of raising fashion specialist not only on the runway of Lincoln Center but also on its rows. And who knows, may be a few of those young and creative individuals standing behind the last row will be the most respected ones in the front row next season?

Let’s wait and see.

Please follow all of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week February Shows (Here)

01 2014 10:46:35 +0000BLANC CASSE for Volt Magazine Starring Helene Desmettre Photographed by Rui Faria
We have some new work to share from our pal across the ocean Rui Faria, the editor of VOLT Magazine, a major fashion and film contributor to our platform, whose work can be see on their WebTV.

Elite London's Helene Desmettre stars in this beauty story that Rui shot for Volt Magazine along with his very talented team including Julia Laza with whom he collaborates often and with stunning results, as you will see below.

CREDITS:

Photographer: Rui Faria

Make Up: Julia Laza at Areia usingMAC
Make Up Assistant: Victoria Borimor
Hair: Antonio de Luca
Stylist: Masha Mombelli
Stylist assistant: Marta Lenzi
Clothes from: Joseph
Model: Helene Desmettre at Elite London

Shot: Studio 9 London
Lighting equipment: ThreeFourSnap
Retouching: Kostas at
All lips sealed by: Lipcote
Design: Rebecca Hawkes

Rui Faria

Rui Faria

Rui Faria

Rui Faria

Rui Faria

12 2013 16:56:57 +0000Online and Offline Integration: Omni-Channel Marketing
BY: NICOLE TAN:

In a paper written last year for the World Retail Congress competition, my group and I cited this as a key finding:

According to an article in Women’s Wear Daily, “bringing the online experience into the physical store remained a key aim for technology providers at the National Retail Federation’s show this year (2012)” (Arthur, 2012). With this trend it will be essential to bring the latest technological concepts into the brick and mortar shopping experience. The implementations of these new technologies will enable customers to increase their interaction with a retailer, both as a company and as a product pre-store to post-store. This would mean increased store traffic, both online and offline. Online and brick-and-mortar retail channels will be flawlessly bridged, giving the customer a different, but yet, seamlessly cohesive shopping experience that is efficient, convenient and enjoyable.

Fast forward a year of being in the industry in Asia, and I have witnessed firsthand the shift in focus from content + commerce to the need for online and offline integration, or what I’d like to refer to as the full circle of the retail market, particularly in fashion. As Federico Marchetti, the CEO of , described in his presentation at the S.E.A Luxury Conference, one of the next phases of his ecommerce experience would be to a collection point, where customers can pick up their physical goods if they desire, as opposed to waiting (and paying) for courier services. Perhaps, the best example would be Angela Ahrendts, Burberry’s CEO, who as seen in this video speaks about blurring the lines between “physical and digital” allowing customers to fully interact with the brand both in their mobile and desktop applications, as well as in a physical retail store.

It is not to be said, however, that content and commerce do not work. Content, after all, is part of the discovery and exploratory shopping stage—aiding a brand, label or particular type of retailer (example: Urban Outfitters versus Intermix versus OAK NYC) to differentiate themselves through a clear brand identity that they’ve chosen to associate themselves with. This might come in the form of certain types of articles they publish (a Dazed and Confused Magazine reader versus a Teen Vogue reader) to the various extent of credibility the editorial team behind the website might have (example: The Cut, Refinery29 and the Editorialist). As stated by Kate Davidson Hudson, co-founder of the Editorialist, in an article in Crain's New York Business, an ecommerce store must be highly specialized in order to succeed, to break through the clutter.

With this in mind, as retailers begin to finalize their 2014 plans and budgets, I do hope that they’ve moved away from separating the digital and physical world, and are instead looking to ways that they can best fuse the two together.
12 2013 12:02:47 +0000IMG Announces Exciting Changes for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week February 2014 Fashion Shows
A press release today from IMG Fashion, the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, confirmed the speculation that changes were ahead for the fashion industries premier event in New York City. As press attendees for many seasons to "The Tents" we can not be more thrilled with the direction Catherine Bennett, SVP and Managing Director, IMG Fashion Events and Properties has implemented for February's Fall collections, "consisting of better curated live shows and presentations at The Tents at Lincoln Center, a new off-site satellite HUB for emerging talent, and an expanded digital platform for a new generation of fashion creators. This new schedule ensures all participants can maximize this key marketing moment during the first stop on the international fashion week calendar."

Simply put the event staged at Lincoln Center became "cluttered". The exclusivity factor became diminished, leading many top designers to show their collections in off site locations, affording them a greater ability to control their audience and product presentation. Amongst the many accomplished speakers which included Angelica Cheung, EIC of Vogue China, the duo behind Philip Lim and Federico Marchetti the Founder of to name a few, was James Lima who presented on fashion films.

James Lima, is a Director from Hollywood who has been mentored by James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. He has since directed ground breaking fashion films for Prada (TREMBLED BLOSSOMS), and other clients such as Versace, Zegna, Loewe, Prada, Alexander Wang and most recently, Louis Vuitton.

Upon the beginning of his presentation, James stresses the point that “Films have music, real life does not.” He urges the guests in the room, which included many high profile luxury executives, that the current use of film in fashion is backward and needs to evolve. He describes the current film as 2D in motion that involves a model moving with no sense of story but rather, focusing on an object and not a subject. James believes that fashion films will evolve into a genre of its own as music videos have, using the power of story that creates memories and feelings, using actors and not models.

As many luxury brands try to leverage the wide consumption of videos by consumers in the digital space, many are also in the midst of figuring out how to break through to the next generation—particularly in Asia, which comprises the youngest demographics and highest middle class growth in the world. Luxury brands, unlike younger fast fashion brands, most often have an iconic logo, a brand heritage and a sense of attainment that can show through much more clearly in a film, more so than a fashion editorial spread, which does not have the ability of sound—which creates much of the ambience in a setting. James cited an example of films having such power of evoking an emotion so strong that causes people to re-enact scenes seen on a film.

TREMBLED BLOSSOMS by JAMES LIMA

Beautiful imagery and emotional storytelling. This is where James Lima believes the direction of fashion film should head towards, and I look forward to the high quality films that we will hopefully be seeing more of by these luxury houses. As James said, luxury brands today are media entities of their own. Videos, which are by far becoming the most consumed type of media, will only have to evolve to keep the consumers intrigued and tuned in.

LADY a Fashion Film for VOGUE ITALIA by Director Luca Finotti

11 2013 14:56:22 +0000Fashion Editorial from Dubai Based Photographer Mazen Abusrour
We're always thrilled to show off the latest work of the immensely talented fashion photographer Mazen Abusrour. Do they have an ethics in Asia Pacific? Or is just about consumption for the wealthy...”

It is often very sad that for those outside and unfamiliar to Asia, this continent is still seen as a) either a huge opportunity for consumption from luxury goods to anything “American”, and I won’t deny it- when I went to China for a holiday, Abercrombie and Hollister were still popular brands amongst the local youth. Not so much in Singapore anymore, apparently. Or b) As the above comment states, a place of unfair labor practices and ‘slave’ factories.

I am utterly disappointed by this comment, and whilst I would admit that such unfair labor does happen in this region, the cause of such low wages have been driven by simple mechanics that can be explained through Economics, from the factors that affect supply and demand to labor economics and the existence of large corporations, that practice economies of scale, thereby ruining the labor wage market. As Debra Langley, CEO of Inverted Edge pointed out, “No one can deny that some factories' practices are less than ideal, but the irony is that many of the companies that use these factories and don't insist on ethical labor rules are not Asian.” And hey, it’s not just Asia that these companies are producing in- sweatshops exists in Africa, South America, even New York City!

As a love of the fashion industry but also a personal advocate of a sustainable business model that employs fair labor practices and ethical sourcing, I am aware of the flaws in this industry as a whole. However, I do not think that sweatshop practices should be pinned down to a certain region with a stigma that labels us almost as tyrants who have the ability to change, but yet refuse to.

To conclude, I think it takes effort from both the suppliers and the consumers to correct labor wages- when consumers are educated properly about what goes into the prices they pay for a T-Shirt or pair of shorts, perhaps they will be more willing to comply and pay the fair prices. This will in turn stop retailers, especially those that have the power to do so, to demand prices that result in slave wages.

I would also hope that the designers in this region would recognize the importance of fair labor rights, especially having grown up in this region and belonging to a certain generation that realize the need for sustainability in order to succeed, that they would not exploit their own country's resources, both in terms of human and natural, for that matter.

11 2013 16:52:24 +0000New York City Created FLATT Mag Issue 5 w/ Stories by Fashion Photographer Nico Iliev & Matthew Modine
Our good friend, fashion photographer, director and FLATT Magazine Editor-at-Large Nico Iliev has created another beautiful editorial with Brazilian model Daniela Braga from Next Models for Issue 5. Halloween dress-up allows for the nation’s adults to throw the rules for daily attire out the window. This includes modesty for women. It is the one day out of the year where your best friend can wear a dryer sheet and say she’s a sexy ghost, and you’re not obligated to lecture her on how she is more than half-naked. However, it is apparent that once Halloween is here in full-force, there comes the annual eye-roll at the sight of scantily-clad costumes from many women, and men too.

I was meandering a Halloween store when I caught a bit of a young woman’s conversation with her friend. “I don’t want a sexy costume because I’m not a slut and I don’t plan on being a whore for the night,” she loudly exclaimed in a sneering tone. This sentiment was rather off-putting. In one sentence, this lady made an assumption about many female Halloween shoppers and also slut-shamed millions of women. Slut-shaming the act of shaming or ridiculing someone for their (supposed) promiscuity or making them feel inferior for certain behavior that deviates from traditional gender expectations.

Now, slut-shame is not a new hot topic. If anything, there’s quite the fatigue with this on-going headliner. (But it should certainly not be put to rest.) Last year, two teens, Felicia Garcia and Amanda Todd were endlessly bullied and slut-shamed which lead them to commit suicide. This sparked an epidemic of internet blogs, vblogs, and articles on the apparent slut-shaming issue, shedding light on the fact that it is an ignorant misconception that because a girl is dressed a certain way, she is to take fault for any possible molestation. There is the notion that because a girl is wearing a short skirt or revealing cleavage that she is asking to be seen as an object or be taken advantage of. Internet propaganda trying to correct society’s flawed idea- photographed rally signs, memes, and designs that read things like “Things that cause rape: rapists.” - have been circulating social media platforms to bring attention to rape culture, problems with gender expectations, and bullying. (And may I add that this is not to be perceived as a a “feminist rant”, this is a blog about the relevant and apparent slut-shaming issue in correlation to Halloween and recent headlines in pop-culture.) The attention that social media has brought to slut-shame has made this topic much more mainstream. It has been a heated on-going discussion. Why would you assume that because a woman is wearing revealing clothing on Halloween that she must have plans on being a “whore for the night”? Many women will take advantage of the fun holiday to dress-up in ways that express their sexuality. That is a woman’s choice and ridiculing her for it is just ridiculous. Are we really going to assume a female the title of “slut” if she is going to pull a naughty nurse costume off the shelf? Never mind that there seems to be no media attention on the boldly violent costume selections for young boys because dressing up as murderous blood-splattered villains is just fine but a busty mermaid is a problem.

To insinuate that a female is a “good girl” with good morals because she is not wearing a “sexy costume”, and that only females with loose morals wear sexy costumes simply perpetuates the old-school whore/virgin dichotomy, which discourages women from embracing their sexuality. Furthermore, is it not absolutely absurd to assume you know a stranger’s personality and morals solely on what they wore on a holiday where you are allowed to dress up as whatever you’d like? Enough to shame and criticize them?

Undeniably, this goes beyond Halloween. Though it is more than old news, people are still slut-shaming Miley Cyrus for provocatively dancing in latex lingerie at the MTV Music Video Awards. The New York Times recently published an intriguing article with insight on the “The Pro-Miley Backlash”. The article states that some may say she is “a victim of our society’s puritanical, even hypocritical attitude toward sex and nudity.” This is not to defend Miley Cyrus as a valid role model or support that she should prostitute herself to pop-culture, but just to state that she is a liberated woman capable of making her own decisions and condemning her with the assumption that she has loose morals is completely unnecessary.

There is also the controversial unrated Blurred Lines music video that has received blunt public heat all summer long. Because the models dancing (and never dancing sexually) are in the nude bearing all their curves, the models and video have been ridiculed all over the internet. Without diving too much into a whole other discussion, I have to mention a great blog that breaks down the feminist criticism of the music video provoking slut shaming, which Polemique defends that it doesn’t in “Blurring the Lines of Feminism: A Criticism of the Criticism of ‘Blurred Lines’”. The blog also makes mention of the aggravating whore/virgin dichotomy problem by citing Taylor Swift lyrics. Swift insinuates in one of her songs that if a girl wears short skirts and high heels she is inferior to a girl who wears sneakers, asserting that a girl who dresses like that is less likely to be girlfriend material, and therefore slut-shaming. What kind of message are you sending, Miss Swift? Interesting thoughts, Polemique!

Slowly, more and more of modern society are starting to discard traditional gender expectations and thankfully, year after year, much of the media stands up against slut-shame. It’s just a matter of time that we can get everyone to think more openly and be careful with their words and actions. We as humans have the right to judge, but to attack, criticize, or chastise someone for their own decision on how to portray their sexuality? That’s poor taste and doesn’t make you better than anyone. -@NaomiChristie

Watch "Rose Et Bleu" and More of filmmaker Naomi Christies work.

10 2013 14:17:36 +0000LEAN ON ME - A Fashion Dance Film Directed by Charlie Wan - Thoughts and Inspired Poem
BY CHARLOTTE DELGRANGE

Wherever there is light, spurts of darkening casts interrupt an evolving chemistry, where the potential for a spark remains on the verge of being ignited. Fashion is composed of many stories, dreams, and tales that are dressed by creators’ visions to enhance a level of vitality, as some pieces of clothing do when enveloping the body. The sentiments that are evoked through any type of artistic form infiltrate our minds through the visual dynamics of familiarity and anonymity, facilitating an emotional response to a non-traditionally defined plot.

In the case of films, most of the material suggests a direct plot, structured to project a more or less obvious conclusion. Native American headdresses have been flaunted in all realms of fashion from runway shows to stylized music videos.

Let’s begin with the major fashion companies who have been under fire for Native American appropriation in recent years. In 2012, Urban Outfitters issued a line that they called “Navajo” and included photos of girls holding flasks while dressed in Native American tribal inspired print and accessories. The controversy exploded as the Navajo Nation commissioned a letter exclaiming their deep objections to the fake tribal prints and navajo theme.

The Navajo Nation currently holds 12 trademarks on the word "Navajo," which includes clothing. While Urban Outfitters didn’t explicitly showcase Native American headdresses in their campaign, they had shirts and other items that displayed illustrations of a Native American headdress. A popular graphic on a shirt was of a skull sporting a headdress. Urban Outfitters decided to withdraw the word “navajo” from their line’s term, but never issued an apology.

In the winter of 2012, Victoria’s Secret caused quite the stir - possibly the biggest in recent years. The beautiful VS model, Karlie Kloss graced the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway in a massive feather headdress and a Pocahontas inspired lingerie set accented by turquoise jewelry and leopard print. When images of the elaborate outfit were released, Victoria Secret took an extreme blow to the face with steamy hate mail and social media platforms and blogs putting them under fire. The famous lingerie line immediately took action and pulled the look from all campaigns and cut it out of the television showcase.

Music videos have also received an overwhelming amount of angry hot air and disapproval. No Doubt’s “Looking Hot” music video was immediately removed amid the controversy for the “cowboys and indians” theme. No Doubt had the video released for barely a day, and took it upon themselves to quickly release an apology statement mentioning that as a multi-racial band they believed in showing cultural respect.

Lana Del Rey’s mesmerizing and cinematic music video for her single “Ride” features her in a huge feather headdress in the desert. The headdress was not paired with a Native costume but was used as an enchanting accessory, possibly in aid of glorifying the beauty of freedom - a theme of the video. Though the video underwent much disapproval from critics and fans alike for the misuse of Native apparel, it was not pulled.

The concern and controversy is that all this appropriation may be contributing to perpetuating the stereotypes of Native Americans. But I would like to propose a question - a question of perspective: could one argue that the incorporation of feather headdresses in fashion be a celebration of an aspect of the culture? Where and how do we know if the intentions were for appreciation or appropriation? There seems to be a great amount of protest when fashion companies use Native American iconography- protest that assumes the companies’ judgement stems solely from ignorance and exploitation. I am not defending the fashion industry by saying we need to give them the benefit of the doubt, but would like to take a brief moment to propose insight into the oblivion of the offender. In the blissful ignorance of these designers who made and accessorized with a headdress, their elaborate pieces were an expression of vibrant art. To them, it was not any different from designing an intricate oriental kimono or a Russian hat (Usanka), both of which have been featured in past televised Victoria’s Secret fashion shows. Perhaps the sacred Native American headdress paired with lingerie accented by animal print is not paying tribute to the bloodshed that the natives suffered. But neither are the “Indian” Halloween costumes or the Washington Redskins. So is all the hot air and protest overreacting or isn’t it? Is this supposed racism comparable to if someone designed a Nazi costume for the VS fashion show? I agree that appropriation of Native imagery is most certainly an insult to Native people. But where do we draw the lines and limits? Or are there no exceptions?

Washington football team, the Redskins, have recently released new statements defending their team’s name. Attorney Lanny Davis exclaimed that in the Annenberg Institute poll, with a national sample of Native Americans, 9 out of 10 Native Americans said they did not mind the team name, “Washington Redskins”. However, research proves that this poll was taken in 2004. That’s nine years ago - nearly a decade. Perhaps now is the prime time for the hot air around this controversy and all controversies regarding the Native American racism and appropriation.

But with so much of it occurring in all areas of pop culture, where do we begin with educating those partaking in appropriation that this is wrong? Which monster do we choose to fight first? Halloween costumes, music videos, or fashion events? Or are people who are up in arms just overreacting? What do you think?

WATCH WANDERLUST FROM DIRECTOR NAOMI CHRISTIE

10 2013 19:46:33 +0000Product Photo Shoots for Ecommerce Websites. What Happens Behind the Scenes?
BY: Nicole Tan

There are many parts of the fashion industry that aren't glamorous. In fact, most parts of the industry, aside from its products, events and gloss magazines can be deemed a glamorous life (Read: There’s nothing glamorous about dragging a rack of couture Vera Wang dresses double your height across the hallway of an office, or doing a pick up for a shoot with a $75,000 men’s watch in your purse running across the streets of Manhattan to make sure you’ve picked up all the necessary items for a shoot in LA, of which your bosses are leaving to in two hours. Expect a lot of panic and perspiration, even in the middle of Winter;)

Having said that, another aspect of my job working at an e-commerce store used to be directing and styling all the shoots, on top of writing the editor’s notes / product descriptions. Thankfully, the various aspects of a shoot have now been divided into several processes between the Buying and Content team.

Product shots aren’t much fun. In fact, it is a process that unlike editorial shoots, sees very little magical moments. The process of an editorial shoot begins from the notification that goods have been received. When a delivery has occurred, the model and photographer is scheduled. If you’re working with a tight budget, I would caution and advise that it is VERY much worth your investment in an experienced model. The various looks for each product is then organized and pulled out, with the occasional mix and matching of clothes with old products and other basics like denims, leggings and tops. These styles are steamed and prepped in advance in terms of style, as well as speed of which the model can change (example: a model is going to take much longer to change her bottoms, especially if they are skinny jeans. So, we would then figure out all the tops to go along with said bottoms in order to save time).

On the day of the shoot, looks are churned out as fast as the team can handle, usually in a 360 degree view where the model works it for the camera (and the clothes!) to get the shot from the desired angle.

After this is done, we then have to create table top shots for both the accessories, and the clothes. These are done either by sophisticated machines, Photoshop or through using a mannequin. Either way, it is a very manual and tedious process in terms of laying out the items to shoot. And in my personal opinion, doesn’t get any better the more you do it.

Once all of these are done, the images are then sorted, re-touched and then sorted once again to be uploaded into the system. And voila, the items, after a semi painstaking process, are now shoppable (@ Inverted Edge).

Behind the Scenes Photo Shoot with photographer Nico Iliev and Model Barbora Dvorakova.

10 2013 13:53:56 +0000Models as Entrepreneurs and Social Media Powerhouses
BY: NICOLE TAN

On a recent scour through the internet to find out what articles were trending, one of my colleagues brought up several articles on the new era model: the model who not only have the looks and the height, but also other talents and most importantly, a business mind.

The popularity of models as idols - at least in a physically motivational way, if not more—have made these figures of symmetrical perfection stars in their own rights. Combine their pretty faces with savvy use of social media, models like Coco Rocha, Karlie Kloss, Chanel Iman and the ever so popular, Cara Delevingne have gained a huge fan following in their own right, and the opportunity to leverage these fans into potential customers.

Of course, models whom we’ve seen leverage on the media industry include TV show hosts of Project Runway, Heidi Klum and America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks. Models who have ventured into the film industry, albeit not all that successful include Lily Cole (Remember: St Trinians and Snowhite and the Huntsmen? (photo)) and most recently, Cara Delevigne, who will be starring in a movie titled, Kids in Love, depicting the hard-party lifestyle of wealthy, young Londoners.

Alas, models have since branched out of the media industry route, and have instead become entrepreneurs to their own start-ups or companies.

A model whose products I am dying to get my hands on to is Miranda Kerr’s range of skincare products, KORA Organics. The model who has flawless skin has certainly convinced me that her product will (hopefully) make my skin as great as hers. I have yet to really test this out, however.

Models, who typically experience the whole process of the fashion industry (and through brands and companies who are veterans in this field) can really pick up on the fashion business, from spotting gaps and room for improvements in the market to assembling the pieces of a fashion business plan. One such example is Armando Cabral, a model who was recruited by Wilhelmina Models at 19 and can add Dries Van Noten, J. Crew, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors to his modelling portfolio list. Armando, who observed that everything in the fashion industry he had witness so far was “too fashion- or too casual and too made in China,” has since opened his own footwear company which features modern takes on classic footwear, such as a hightop sneaker in blackwool and suede to ballet flats in blue woven leather and sturdy canvas oxfords. His footwear is now sold in 40 stores in 15 countries.

With the rise of e-commerce startups and the ease of many resources that can be found online to start your own company (from Kickstarter to easy payment gateways for individuals and small companies like Shopify), we would expect to see more models branching out into other aspects of the fashion and media industry.

-

Discussion on Entrepreneurship I produced with Professor Henry Welt the Chair of Entrepreneurship at The Fashion Institute of Technology.

09 2013 13:54:46 +0000
