EFA–winning directors Michael Haneke, Peter Liechti and Ken Loach took part of the press conference which followed the EFA 2009 ceremony.

Haneke's The White Ribbon received three EFA trophies. Liechti won the EFA - Arte Award for Best Documentary for The Sound of Insects, and Loach got the EFA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 22nd edition of European Film Awards took place in Essen and Bochum, both in the Ruhr area (Germany).
