Biopics on Steve Jobs, Diana and JFK - Los Angeles Film Festival Kicks Off Today - Film Annex Industry Newsletter

Posted on at

This summer will be about biopics. Open Road Films just announced that Jobs, the first part of the upcoming movie about Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs, will be released on August 16. The movie focuses on the experiences and people that influenced Jobs from 1971 to 2001 and how they defined his character. It is directed by Joshua Michael Stern and stars Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs. This week, we also got the first look at two other biopics, first for television, with Rob Lowe's portrayal of JFK in Killing Kennedy, to air in November on the National Geographic Channel (Left picture. From a political leader to the People's Princess... you can now watch the first trailer for Diana, the biopic on the late Princess of Wales' relationship and affair with surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan and her work against landmines. The teaser mostly focuses on the resemblance between Diana and actress Naomie Watts and doesn't give away much about the film, which will open in theaters in the UK in September.

Today is the official kick off of the Los Angeles Film Festival. It actually already started last night with a pre-festival screening of Man of Steel. It opens tonight with I'm So Excited! by Pedro Almodovar, who goes back to his comic style with this new feature. You can see a list of all the films in competition and special screenings here. Don't miss the Summer Showcase, for an advance look at the latest indie film releases, the special screening of Monsters University a few day before its official release in theaters, and the free screenings open to the public. The festival also includes special events, like two masterclasses about comedy acting and music scores, panels about women editors and the use of digital platforms, "coffee talks" with directors, actors and other film industry professionals, and much more. You can still buy your tickets and passes for the screenings and events. The festival ends on June 23.
