BLOG #166: Kites

Posted on at

The picture above was taken during the hot air balloon fiesta in Pampanga.  These kites were sold by peddlers and also in stalls at the venue.  It was so nice and very nostalgic to see lots of kites flying.

Kites remind us of childhood - how carefree and young we are.  Flying a kite gives us a sense of control.  There is that delight when we see it fly up in the air wishing that we could fly with it too.  There is a simplicity in finding joy in it.  I remember that as a kid, that we would make instant kites by tying a string to a plastic bag and run with it, never mind that it does not fly high as long as you run and it trails behind - an inch or two higher than you.

I remember during my elementary and high school days that every April (if my memory serves me right) here in Baguio there was a kite festival sponsored by a milk company.  This was held at the Melvin Jones field.  I remember how festive and colorful it was.  There were kite flying competitions and I remember how jealous I was seeing those kites of different colors and sizes flying up above wishing I could fly one.  However, that event was canceled and I think the kites last flew in 2004.
