BLOG: No One is Waiting During Transformation Scenes

Posted on at

OK, so one criticism of various anime series is the "transformation scenes taking upwards of 1 minute and the bad guys are just waiting there." This would be valid, if it wasn't false. Come with me on this journey into the "time science" behind transformation scenes.

Before I get into the science, let me take a moment to give a brief description of what I'm talking about with transformation scenes. In a series such as sailor moon, power rangers/super sentai, Digimon Frontier, the main characters are normal people by day and super heroes when the time requires. Now in American series with these secret identities (take comic book heroes for example), we do our costume transformations in real time, be that stripping off the suit into the costume underneath, or spinning around really fast with the clothing transformation happening in the swirl. However, with Japanese series, they like to show off the actual transformation, hence the cool extended transformation scenes. The characters can't fight the bag guys in their street clothes, so they have to change.

The criticism is that here in the US, our transformations take under 10 seconds whereas the Japanese transformations take upwards of a minute for them to happen. With American transformations, we see what happens in the world while the hero is transforming, but in the Japanese series, we don't. The characters go into some mysterious backdrop world while this amazing transformation happens. The criticism happens with "so what does the bad guy do during this time? Just wait for it to happen? That's stupid." Well, that's not the case. You're mistaken in that you are assuming that these transformations happen in real time, when in fact they don't. They happen in a super slowed down bullet time.

OK, now before you start saying "that's just a conspiracy, you have no proof." Well, actually I do. I'm quite familiar with the power rangers franchise. Power Rangers, or Super Sentai in Japan, is a major culprit of the long transformations. Well, they don't always take long transformations. When a ranger is running into action and hasn't transformed yet, they don't go all "Iron Man 3" where the costume latches onto them as they're running. Instead, it happens almost instantly. There are various instances when from a story telling perspective, it would be to disrupting to show the full transformation animation in the transformation bullet time, so they show it in real time. Also, if you pay attention to the surroundings of the transforming characters, you'll notice that none of the environmental elements indicate a time passing, which I take to mean that the transformation animations aren't happening in real time, but instead in super slowed down bullet time. The evidence is there. The villains aren't just sitting there twiddling their thumbs while they wait for the hero to transform. That happens in the blink of an eye. The long transformation characters actually transform faster than the American transformation characters.

Now if you're going to go into the physics and biology of "a human couldn't survive moving that fast." Well now you're just being ridiculous. Evil monsters, magical transformations, typically a talking animal is in there somewhere, physically impossible fights and attacks, and you're going to get bent up over a human moving at the speed of sound. Please. Well this has been Pokematic, signing off, and bu-bye.
