"The Sense in the Sacrifice" is episode four of season nine of Bones, the forensic drama television series loosely based on the novels and life of anthropologist Kathy Reichs. In this episode, a plan put in place to trap Christopher Pelant does not work as intended.

Blocking Christopher Pelant's Ability to Hack the Lab

The episode opens in the lab at the Jeffersonian with Hodgins following Angela around very closely. She's setting up jammers so that Christopher Pelant cannot hack through it.

Copying Pelant's Methods with a Corpse

Sweets enters with Caroline, despite being on leave, because this was his idea. They have a body, not that of a murder victim, but of someone who died of natural causes and donated his body to the Jeffersonian. The idea is that Pelant will hate the idea of someone stealing his limelight. So they are going to try and flush him out. Angela has designed a copycat body drop, modelled after a painting of Prometheus. Angela models fake ID for the victim whilst Cam, Hodgins and Brennan prepare the body.

Booth isn't Keen on the Plan

Booth meets a van in the garage at night; the van is being driven by Flynn. Flynn was badly injured (repeatedly shot by miniguns; it's a wonder he's alive) by Pelant in "The Corpse in the Canopy" and is now permanently behind a desk. Booth doesn't like the plan. Flynn is to prepare the body as Brennan intends.

The Body Found is Not the One the Team Planted

Brennan and Booth are in bed waiting for a call. Which they get before they can indulge in Brennan's suggestion for getting to sleep. The FBI has found the body. They start looking at the scene as if it is Pelant's when Hodgins finds a flower on the scene. And they never intended to plant a flower. Not only did they not manage to fool Pelant, it is not their body. It is that of Flynn. Booth is now really not happy.

Flynn is Dead, But How Did Pelant Discover the Plan?

As the body is examined, Brennan discovers that Pelant mirrored her technique. Also that Flynn was alive when his liver was removed. The question is how did Pelant find out? There were only a limited number of people in the know, all of whom Booth trusts, and there didn't seem to be any way Pelant could have hacked or bugged anyone. Sweets asks if possibly Flynn was the one who leaked the plan. Booth does not. Then Brennan finds evidence of reconstructive surgery far too expensive for Flynn to afford and a getaway stash of money and fake IDs is found in Flynn's apartment. The evidence all points at Flynn, but Booth is not convinced. He believes that Pelant planted the evidence.

Flynn's Experimental Surgery

The doctor who performed the expensive, and experimental, surgery on Flynn is located. He was paid by an anonymous donation to his fund. A donation he couldn't track down. However, the number of remodelled fractures that Brennan found on the body didn't match the number that the doctor repaired. Brennan believes that Pelant paid for the surgery to frame Flynn - because that's what Booth believes, and she believes in him.

Pelant Speaks to Brennan in Person

The extra fracture links to a nine-year-old unsolved homicide that Brennan worked on, as it's identical. It's a message from Pelant to Brennan. So that he can speak to her in person. With a high tech grenade. Pelant says that the unsolved murder was committed by a serial killer who killed more people. Pelant says he is going to find the killer before Brennan does. Because he's smarter than she is.

Pelant Wants Brennan to Like Him

Sweets says that Pelant is trying to 'seduce' Brennan, to get her to like him, just as Brennan changed her opinion of Booth and Sweets. Sweets says that Pelant wants to replace Booth in Brennan's life, and that when Pelant realises that will never happen, he will kill Brennan, himself and as many other people as possible.

Could this finally be the end for Christopher Pelant?
