Dying With Dignity

Posted on at

I was wondering all day today what to write as I was itching to write yet another blog. Then lo and behold I saw a preview of a news broadcast talking about assisted suicide. Wow, I thought, perfect! A couple of things about this topic that don't make any sense what so ever. I'm going to explain these things that don't make sense. The first point I want to make is if a person wants to die so bad then why in the world would a law stop a person from killing themselves? People break the law on a constant basis whether it's in your car speeding, or jaywalking or what ever else. Heck, many people commit suicide by doing these exact things. What I'm saying is should we up the speed limit so speeders can drive with dignity? Of course not. Those limits are there to protect other people, and so are laws against assisted suicide. It's your constitutional right to kill yourself, but I completely understand why it is illegal to assist someone in killing themselves. When a person wants to kill themselves how does someone assisting your suicide make it all of a sudden dignified? These things just aren't adding up. If things are that bad in your life, I seriously doubt that dignity is going to be the one thing stopping you from killing yourself. If you want to kill yourself with dignity then have a "killing yourself with dignity" gathering and a ceremony, and kill yourself at the end of the day if that's really the path you want to chose. But, to ask someone to kill you? What kind of pressure are you putting on the other person? What if the assisted suicide law is passed and what if an elderly person isn't able to talk or communicate and this person has a lot of inheritance to give out, and the people waiting to inherit the profits want to kill the person to get the inheritance? They can simply claim that this person has suffered enough and he/she want's to kill themselves. The poor elderly person can't even defend himself/herself. If assisted suicide was allowed all of a sudden everyone would be at risk. If this law passed it would simply be a foot in the door for other laws to pass making it OK to kill anyone with any sort of defect. It would be a very slippery slope to a society being allowed to kill someone because they are simply considered an inconvenience to society. Here is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. My wife is pregnant and she went into the doctors today. The doctor asked her if she would like to see if there are birth defects and abort the baby if there are any birth defects. Simple as that. Kill because of a birth defect. It first started out as simple abortion, now they encourage aborting the baby if there are defects. What they are doing now is try to make assisted suicide OK, and down the road someone can simply sign some forms to have you killed by a doctor if you get into a car accident and don't come out of it all perfect. I can guarantee you that this is the road intended for the assisted suicide bill.
