Germs are disease causing microorganisms. Bacteria and viruses are the most common germs. When germs enter in our body, they attack different parts of the body. They reproduce and increase their number. Germs produce poisonous substance called Toxin. Toxin spreads in our body cells and destroys them. It results in a Disease. This condition is called infection. Sometimes, germs cause an infection to only some particular part of the body like your eyes, lungs, etc. Sometimes, they might effect the whole body causing fever.

HOW DO GERMS ENTER THE BODY..? Different germs enter the bodies in different ways. Many germs enter through mouth. When you eat contaminated food or drinks, germs enter through your mouth. Germs also enter through respiratory system. When people cough and sneeze, germs from their bodies are pushed out into the air. When you breathe in the same air, germs enter your body. Some germs enter through wounded skin. You can catch some diseases if you touch people who have these diseases, or if you use the things that they have used, such as their cups, towels, combs, etc. Some animals like houseflies, mosquitoes, etc. carry germs from one person to another. Such animals are called Vectors.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE. Infectious Diseases are those diseases that can spread person to person. They are caused by germs. Bacteria and viruses cause many infectious diseases. Some bacteria cause strep throat. They symptoms of this disease are sore throat, fever and Headache. Another disease caused by bacteria is typhoid. Its symptoms are high fever, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. This disease spreads through eating contaminated food or drinks. Common cold is caused by virus. Its symptoms include cough, runny nose, itchy eyes and sore throat. Virus also causes influenza which spreads by touching coughing and sneezing. Its symptoms include fever, pain and cold symptoms. Measles is also caused by virus. Its patient has rashes on his face and neck. Pneumonia is caused by virus, bacteria or fungi. Its patient has difficulty in breathing, painful cough and fever. It is caused due to contaminated air.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES. Allah has created an amazing defence system in our body which takes action when any germ enters in our body. White blood cells fight against germs. We can protect ourselves from germs by adopting some precautionary measures.

  • Always wash hands before touching the food.

  • Always wash hands after using toilet and whenever you touch a sick person.
  • Always cover your mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing.
  • Always spit into a separate bin.
  • Tap water contains many germs. Boiling the water destroys many germs present in it. Always drink boiled or filtered water.

  • Germs can enter through wounds or cuts. So, whenever you have a cut or wound, it is important to clean it immediately and cover it with a clean dressing.

The people who have some infections should not be allowed to cook food and to work in food factories. Always use a new syringe for blood transfusion.

Many bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics. An antibiotic is a drug which kills bacteria but does not damage the body cells.
