The term "global village" is used to mean the world with all means of communications like the internet. The Internet permits the users from all around the world to communicate and connect with one another. In 1948, the term Global Village was used in a book "America and Cosmic Man" written by P. Wyndham Lewis. Although the meaning was slightly different then (covering technology up to the television), now the word has a much broader sense.

The current developments in information technology and communication are really astounding. Over the last few years; there has been an explosion in the methods of communication. From the age of teleprinters, we have come to the age of radios, TVs, fax machines, computers, the internet, cell phones and cyberspace. In almost all parts of the world these fast track developments have had their impact.

The media has been especially affected by technological advances. Newspapers are still there, of course, but instead of yesterday's news, we can now read about events as they happen, through the internet, TV etc. When the Pope steps out on his balcony, we can see him just as clearly as the people there is Rome can. Distance has become a thing of the past. News travels as if we are all living together in one village. That is why the world now is a 'Global Village' !

Thanks to the Internet, we can now know about anyone, anything instantly. People can chat and talk with each other as if they are physically present together. The barriers of distance and culture are fast breaking down. People can exchange ideas, pictures, information, and so on, the miles separating them becoming insignificant due to these powerful development, just like in a village !
