NATO is helping preserve an old mosque in Afghanistan

Posted on at

Not only is NATO engaged in rebuilding and humanitarian work on the ground in Afghanistan but it is also working towards preserving and restoring monuments important from heritage point of view. In this video we see how NATO is spearheading the restoration work of a two-century-old Kabul mosque. This mosque was nearly completely destroyed due to the incessant wars that the country has faced in the past three decades. The local priest or Mullah of the mosque has been actively involved in raising funds for this activity.

During Friday’s prayers, he solicits money from the worshippers for this important task. He is also grateful for the monetary help that he has received from NATO towards this holy effort. As news of his efforts spread, the Minister for Culture and Information came to have first-hand look at the mosque.  He has been instrumental in getting the repairs carried out with the help of American forces.

Though the neighborhood has a number of smaller mosques, this one is of special importance and among the oldest existing here. It is used for prayers by the locals. Thus, it was really crucial that repair work be done immediately. The restoration is also being done with great care taking care to use original techniques and materials to maintain its historical and cultural accuracy.

The engineers have worked in painstaking detail. The designs of the pillars have been replicated right down to the details of the design, construction style and material. As each pillar and dome is a crucial part in the historical significance of the mosque, each detail is carefully observed and incorporated. The restoration work is expected to complete soon.

It is important that all facets of life in Afghanistan are given equal importance when it comes to rebuilding. Building key infrastructure like roads, railways, hospitals, schools etc. is as important as taking care of the cultural heritage of the country. Rebuilding is a holistic approach and a step forward towards a progressive Afghanistan.
