New Africa Special Adviser

Africa neglected or underestimated continues to be focus of this UN Secretary General. Maged Abdelaziz current UN Ambassador of Egypt (and his country’s Deputy during my tenure as Bosnia Ambassador), has been named by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as his new Special Adviser on Africa. Mr. Abdelaziz, who brings to the position over 30 years of experience in multilateral diplomacy, will focus on “revitalizing the agenda of the special needs of Africa,” according to the announcement. Ambassador Abdelaziz beyond experience also has the energy and temperament to address the compelling and urgent issues of Africa. The major question I have to ask my old colleague is his move to focus on the UN’s Africa agenda and indication of matters becoming more uncertain regarding the future of Egypt.
