NYFW a Recap by Louie Rodrigues

The week filled with diet coke, new collections and models running in the subway has come to an end.  Here are a few of our favorite trends.

Clothes; GUYS: Looking like a gentleman never goes a miss! The fitted blazer, slim cut trousers, bright shirt and pocket square was something we had seen on and off the catwalk this week – pastal colours are a hit. Have a look at the Pierre Balmain s/s13 and john bartlett s/s13 collections for inspiration. Girls: Sleek, sexy and strong – the three S’s we took away from this season. On the catwalk we noticed a lot of strong pieces with bold and sharp edges – Calvin Klein s/s13 and Marc Jacobs s/s13 did this justice. So find a sleek dress, add a bold statement blazer, slick back your hair and add a Smokey eye - you are ready to go!

Hair; Guys: If you started growing your hair, now would be a good time to cut it and buy a few styling products – we recommend gel. This season we spotted most guys with their hair slicked back – short on the sides, long on the top. If you want to go all the way we suggest the look featured in the Perry Duckie Brown s/s13 catwalk – side parting and a lot of gel, that “school boy” look is back. Girls: This season on the catwalk we noticed a lot of up-do’s and flowers. We checked out the Josie Natori s/s13 and Mia Moretti X Pencey s/s13 collections and figured having your hair down is “so last season”.  Models were sporting the “picnic party” look as they had their hair slicked back with flowers pinned in. During the Rachel Comey s/s13 and Behnaz Sarafpour s/s13catwalks we didn’t spot flowers but the models all had their hair slicked back and up. It’s that time to put up your hair and show your face.

Shoes; Guys: This trend has been going around for such a long time now and we wonder if it will ever become unfashionable. The J.lindeberg s/s13 presentation pulled of this style to perfection! This trend must be a keeper so take note – loafers, no socks and trousers that only just touch your ankles. Girls: It felt like we were going back to primary school, as with nearly each show the models were sporting socks and heels. If you had seen the Marc by Marc Jacobs s/s13 catwalk you would have noticed every model wearing socks without fail. Picking a bright color sock will completely break up your outfit and make it stand out. Quick warning: ankle socks are not allowed.

Beauty; Guys: You are all off the hook this season, as we didn’t spot any make-up on the boys. We actually realized that this season is all about being fresh faced – so do as you please. Girls: Put away all of that foundation and bronzer as it is all about the eyes now. We noticed that there was a heavy focus on eye make-up this season. Our favorite has to be the timeless black “Smokey” eye. When done well like the models at the Creatures of the Wind s/s13 and Carolina Herrera s/s13 shows– no one will care if you are wearing blush or not.
