What is nutrition?

The simple answer is that:

Nutrition is the science of food. Nutrition provides the necessary nourishment for body cells, organs and tissues to survive and this nourishment is received through the food that we consume. Just how we require air to breathe, we similarly require food in order to live. Food intake provides the necessary nourishment to help you live a long and healthy life. It is nutrition that takes care of the wear and tear that our organs go through day in and day out. Simply, proper nutrition is extremely important for all living beings.

Let's understand nutrition in a more scientific way. In terms of biochemistry and biology, nutrition is the science that takes into consideration biochemical sequences and metabolic pathways that govern various organs inside your body. Nutrition takes into account several processes such as digestion, absorption, storage and excretion. All these processes strike a fine balance and regulate the metabolic functions of our body.

For a healthy life style we need to eat a well balanced diet that is rich in both macro and micro nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. In addition, water is very important to consumer and is also considered to be a nutrient essential for the smooth functions of organ systems.

Nutrition is important for all age groups and essential throughout the life cycle. It plays an important role in several cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and hypertension; all requiring proper nutrition for effective disease management.

A well balanced nutritious diet is absolutely necessary to stay healthy. Exercise and workout alone will not help one stay fit; add the right nutrition and noticeable results will be seen.

“We are what we eat” is an old proverb. Eating nutritionally is a an all around good factor to living a healthy life.
