Lahore is the capital of Punjab. It stands on the bank of the Ravi river. Lahore is an ancient town and there are grounds to believe that a town existed here during the Indus valley civilization period. According to Hindu traditions the town was founded by Raja loh the son of Ram Chandra and was named after him. This tradition does not stant the test of historical scrutiny.

Further research has shown that Lahore merely means Loh-Awar, a fort as strong as iron. Lahore rose into importance during the Ghazanavid period .it was developed and enlarged under Ayaz the favourite of Mahmud. Ayaz was for several years the Governor of Lahore and lies buried here, Lahore and accupied by Shahbuddin Ghuri in 1186 A.D. On the death of Shahbuddin Ghuri, Qutbuddin Aibak, was crowned at Lahore in 1206 as the first Muslim emperorof the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent. He died in 1210 and is buried at Lahore. Lahore attained its real magnigicence during the Mughal period.

Kamran Mirza built  a palace and a garden here. Akbar mde Lahore his capital in 1584 to 1598. Jahangir had great for Lahore, and he and his queen Nur Jahan lie buried here. Shah Jahan was born at Lahore and did much to embellish the city of hi birth. Aurangzed give the town the Badshahi mosque. Sikhs ruled Lahore for about fifty years and they deprived Lahore of most of the historic monuments.
