Reflection on past teaching methods of english

Posted on at

Before starting class when I had a chance to see course outline, I thought that we will learn first week topic in a general way as other teachers used to teach us (discussions, presentations etc), and teacher would start class by brainstorming ideas about subject name “Teaching of English” and introduce course outline. I also did some preparation regarding first week topics.

When I was in class my perceptions were totally different, the way of starting class brought feelings of joy, excitement and motivate all students.  I really like first activity, in which we practiced greeting sentences and adding expressions into it.  Then we introduced to course outline and some classroom rules.

Second activity was excellent in which we all shared our school experiences regarding good, bad and worst teacher, and that activity was the key element of first week topics.  We learned “Moving from teacher-centered to learner-centered pedagogy” by relating our experiences, kongfo panda movie and also sir shared his own meaningful experiences.

Few concepts of Community of participation that we can apply in out teaching and learning process are,

·         Participation – As we participate more in our community our level will increase with the passage of time.

·         Peripherality- the people who join our community and have little experience

·         Legitimacy- the people who are member of our community and have more experience than others. People consider their thoughts.

·         Power- knowledge- in classroom community or other the most important thing is knowledge. In traditional classroom most teachers consider those students who have more knowledge than others.

·         New comers and old timers- for example; new students entered in English language classroom having little knowledge of English (New comers) and students who are already member of class since long and have more knowledge (old timers).

·         Insider and outsider- come in English language class having little experience and with the purpose of learning; they use learner-centered approach in classroom (Insider) and having little experience of teaching, believe on teacher-centered classroom.

Teacher shared his research on two schools of thoughts of teachers having same teaching experiences but they have different teaching approaches and view about knowledge, learning, learners, role of teacher, and teaching approaches. So the teachers who think that knowledge is in the book, learners are empty vessels, learning is memorizing, teacher is knowledge transmitter, and teaching approach is teacher-centered are actually believe on Behaviorism theory. On the contrary to above noted views, insiders think that knowledge is constructed by learners, learners are constructors of knowledge or highly active learners, learning is interaction,  teacher role is facilitator, teaching approach is learner-centered  (discussion, problem solving, interaction or cooperation), so these teachers are believe on constructivism theory of learning.

Previously I learned these topics (learner-centered, teacher centered, behaviorism and constructivism theory) by reading manual of child development in home without discussion and discussing teaching and learning approaches in classroom. I remember that I have not related these concepts with my experiences, real life situations or with any theory of teaching and learning. All three sessions were excellent learning experience for me, Positive aspects of session are teacher connected theory, concepts with our experiences, movie, theory of learning and teaching and he also shared his meaningful experiences.

CRITICAL POINTS:

Class is divided into four groups till 16th week, and we have grouped differently in which we have different people. It is a new learning experience for me.
