Sidq (veracity, truthfulness):

Posted on at

The Arabic word “sidq” means veracity and truthfulness and its Persian word is “Rastgoyee”. But what it is in reality and what Islam says about it? Sidq means to be true in thought, words, and actions. To be loyal to Allah, a true Muslim must reflect it throughout his/her life. One should never try to deviate from the truth and the right path and never try to act, talk or think falsehood.

Opposite of sidq is “Kizb” in Arabic word which means falsehood. A true Muslim will never go towards kizb or falsehood. One should never tell a lie even as a joke, but nowadays, people think it is very simple to say lie sometimes. But it is counted on as a sin in Islam.

There are verses of the Holy Qur’an some which I shall quit as follows:

Surah At-Tawbah 119: ((O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds))

Surah Al-Ahzab 35: ((….. the men and women who are truthful (in their speech and deeds))

Surah Muhammad 21: ((…. Then if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them))

There are Hadith (Sayings of the Prophetصلي الله عليه و سلم) in this regard some of which I shall write as follows:

Hazrati Abdullah Ibni Uma  ( رضي الله عنهما) has narrated, the Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said, they will go out of Islam as an arrow darts out of game’s body, “Sahih Al-Bukhari vol 9, Hadith No 66

Hazrati Ibni Masoud( رضي الله عنه)   narrated, The Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم)   said: Truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to paradise and as far as the person selects truth, he/she is written truthful near Allah, and the falsehood leads man/woman towards bad deeds and bad deeds lead towards Hell and the person tells as much lie as he/she is written great liar near Allah.

Hazrati Hasan Ibni Ali( رضي الله عنهما)  says, I have memorized from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be up on him) that used to say, leave what leads to mistrust (doubt) for a thing that doesn’t lead you to suspicion, because the truth brings confident and peace in you and the falsehood makes you shaky and suspicious.

Although our topic of discussion is , but as per the above Hadith, Doubt is not good also. Doubt is a mental state, but I can rather say it is a mental sickness which effects negatively on one understandings of another one. As it is not our topic of discussion, I would like to put a full stop about it here.

In short, it is Sidq which leads one towards prosperity, good personality among the society, to the highest mountains of successfulness, and happiness, but in contrary and unfortunately it is the kizb (telling lie) which leads you towards wrong doing and finally result in your failure both in your daily life in this world and the world Hereafter.
