Step 3: How to Be Able to Do What You Haven't Done Before - Let Go of Controlling the Outcome

Posted on at

So you’ve finally decided on doing whatever it is you’ve wanted to do. It can be anything from getting a house, slimming down, stopping smoking, changing careers, to having an exotic pet or being a rock star etc. You’ve also started taking action on how to get it and what you’ll need to have it etc., what else do you need to do then?

After Step 1 and Step 2, you’ll also need to take note of these small warnings or precautions so you don’t go crazy from going for your goals and dreams. It’s important to be open to changes along the way when it comes to finally pushing through with your plans and achieving/reaching your hopes and dreams.

♦     Learn to Let Go     ♦

After you’ve decided on doing it and started taking action, remember the following:

• Be open to the possibility of not being able to do everything you wrote down or planned.

Your life is not a movie that goes exactly as planned. Heck, I bet even the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter movies (or that last movie you watched) never went exactly as planned while being made but it still came out great.

Learn to trust that when you continue doing things and keep moving forward, you will reach that goal and dream pretty soon. Change is inevitable. No matter if you aren't able to do one thing or the other as long as you keep doing other things to keep you moving towards your goal then you have already won.

• Be sure you’re going to do it as legally and morally as possible or without stepping on anyone’s toes.

Realize your dream/goal but don’t crush other people along the way. Balance is the key. It doesn’t mean that if you reach your goal/dream it should be at the expense of someone else. Think win/win situations as much as possible.

• There are things that may not be meant for you even though you want it so bad.

Always trust your instincts or pray for guidance. If one door closes, another one will open. Think positive and give others a chance too!

For example, if you're joining a sports competition you will have your chance to win that gold medal. Keep at it and work hard to be better than your previous self, one day you will eventually get that gold medal or any medal for that matter. If not in a prestigious competition, maybe start at a smaller local competition.

• Do not insist on it if you’ve tried EVERYTHING for so long and still get nothing.

It’s one of two things:

  1. There may be something/someone else that’s better for you.
  2. It’s not the right time. / You’re not ready or fully prepared yet.

So relax and keep on doing what you can do while you reach for your dreams. You have plenty of goals so take it one step at a time. Take a break and reorganize and prepare yourself to have that goal/dream in your hands.

• If your goals change after a certain time there’s nothing wrong with placing it on hold for some time.

Remember, if you really want it and are really decided on it, it won’t matter when you get it. There are exceptions to this of course but usually when you want it so badly and you do everything to get it, you will get it eventually. The universe will help you get it.

• Make sure to take one step at a time towards your real dreams/goals and you’ll get there in no time.

Before you really start on this though, let me make one thing clear: I’m not talking about something that you want now then don’t want the next day. This series of articles is not to satisfy your ego or hurt other people in the process. This dream/goal I’m referring to is something that when you get it, you will feel satisfied, fulfilled and happy from the bottom of your heart. Where upon achieving it, most people will be happy for you and/or it’d make them proud of you.

Sometimes the more we hurry things the more it will not be good for us. Take the time when improving yourself, move towards your goal even if it takes too long and eventually you will get there. You can also go back and read Step 2 if you want to be inspired on how to take action on your dreams.

♦     Recommendations     ♦

This 3-step series of articles should not to make you feel discontented, annoyed and stuck up once you get your goal/dream. ("Vengeance is empty," "Let karma take care of them," etc., etc., you getting my point? That’s actually a different topic but I just had to say it.)

If you need to prove someone wrong by taking revenge, that's terrible. Improve upon yourself and you will not need to prove yourself to anyone. Be in competition with yourself and make yourself better than yesterday.

Once you’re decided on having/reaching it, whatever it may be, almost nothing can stop youKung ayaw may dahilan, kung gusto maraming pwedeng paraan (If there’s a will, there’s a way).  Now, if you’re scared to do something, analyze why first. Go back to Step 1. Or if it’s something wrong but you still dream of doing it, well that’s something I do not recommend and is a topic for another day.

In closing, after reading all of my 3-Step series, here's the summary of my advice to you:

Let go of controlling the outcome when you take action after deciding on doing it!

Now get out there and reach for your dreams! Good luck!

This ends my 3-Step Series on How to Be Able to Do What You Haven't Done Before.

(Because over the past few years I’ve read all the self-help books I could and more, I’m sharing this with everyone. It’d probably make me richer if I wrote a book or do what Ramit Sethi, Tim Ferriss, Bo Sanchez, or even what Francis Kong is doing but I haven’t decided on that yet.
Originally written in July 2013, I’ve edited and added to this for better understanding. If this doesn’t work for you, you’re free to find something else that will. )
