On January 21st 1846 the first edition of The Daily News, a national daily newspaper, went on sale in the United Kingdom.
The paper during its life merged with the Morning Leader, then the Westminster Gazette, and finally thr Daily Chronicle in 1930, forming the News Chronicle. That paper continued to be printed until 1960, when it was absorbed by the Daily Mail.
This might not seem that important a newspaper to commemorate the first edition of, especially as it was not an immediate commercial success. What is notable about the paper is the man who founded it and who was its first editor - Charles Dickens.
