The First Performance of Peter Pan

Posted on at

On 27th December 1904, a play known as Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up premiered at the Duke of York's Theatre in London. Yes, this story was originally a play.

Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie, tells the story of Peter Pan, a boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling (from which the play's other name, Peter and Wendy, came) and her brothers.

The story has been rather successful. As well as the original play, there was also a book, and it has since appeared on Broadway and adapted into pantomime, stage musical, television programmes, live action films - including spin-off versions - and a Disney animated film. Heck, it's probably been adapted for radio, too.

Barrie gave the copyright to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London in 1929, and the current copyright status is a bit mixed, as the original work is now public domain in many countries.
