In 1703 Czar peter the great {1672-1725} founded his new capital city of st petersburg know as leningrad during most of the 20th century. An energticand determined Westernizer, peter set out to create outside the city a complex to rival Versailles. He planned the layout himself and assembled an army of soldiers and serfs to dig canals and channels for the dizzying array of waterworks.
