Today- it is the Republic Day of India.

Though India attained independence on August 15, 1947, it had no permanent constitution of its own at the beginning and instead its laws were based on the laws enacted and implemented by the British. So, the necessity for a permanent constitution was felt.  After many amendments the Constitution was approved and accepted on November 26, 1949.  But it was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system and India emerged as an independent republic with effect from this date. So, 26 January is a special day to all Indians. The day was so selected as on 26 January in 1930 the Indian National Congress had proclaimed ‘Purna Swaraj‘for the country.
