What are Furuncles and Carbuncles

The Furuncle is commonly known as boil. It is usually evolving from a bacterial infection called staphylococcal folliculitis. A boil is fluctuant mass wherein it is enclosing a collection of pus inside. This is painful, deep and walled-off.

The Carbuncle on the other hand is condition where coalescing furuncles or the infected follicles are interconnected aggregate. This is deep extremely painful.

What would be the treatments for Furuncles and Carbuncles?

The first step in the treatment procedure is the cleaning. Several times in a day, you have to apply the infected portion with moist and warm compress for at least thirty minutes. This will ease the inflammation and pain of infected part.

To release and lessen the fluid and pus in the infected part, primarily you have to institute and manage a drainage.

We have to prevent the spread of bacterial by giving oral antibiotics which is called anti-staphylococcal antibiotics. This medication should be given to the patient at least for 7 days.

For nasal carriage, the Staphylococcus aureus must be eradicated. This is through the application of fusidic acid cream or with another cream called mupirocin 2% at the anterior nares BID within the span of 5 to 7 days.

However in some cases, another medication can be prescribed for more persistent colonization. You can give Cloxacillin 500 mg, four times a days or 600 mg of Refampicin. The medication is prescribed within 7 up to 10 days.
