Answer:

The grandfather didn't know what did the scholarship jacket mean. When Marta explained all , he ignored her and went back to the hoeing the weeds. He tried to make Marta realize that if someone had to pay for the jacket hoe could it be called a scholarship jacket. He asked Marta to tell her Principal straight that she would not pay the fifteen dollars. His words were a thunderclap on Marta. She was extremely hurt but at the end , she understood the significance of his words.
