Shahrbanoo wants to tell a completely different story about Afghanistan from the one you are used to hearing.

Wolf and Sheep will be this - a creative and poetic portrait of the rural community where Shahr grew up. A place where children must work all day but still have a childhood. A place where a wolf wanders around on two legs. Wolf and Sheep will be a film that mixes the realist with the magic in an experimental way.

Wolf and Sheep will be the first art-house film by a female director in Afghan cinema - EVER!

Moreover, the film will be a close up of an Afghan society from the point of view of a young female filmmaker. This film is very important for recreating Afghan film culture.

But without your support this film will not happen - so please browse through the amazing rewards and choose your way of support. Thank you!

Earlier this year in May/June we spent two weeks in Bamyan, central Afghanistan, casting 800 children.  Shahr decided to cast most of the children from one village Ali Ahmad, so that the children know each other. Ali Ahmad is a small village in central Afghanistan made up around 20 houses.

How the funds will be used

To shoot in a country like Afghanistan is not easy, because the future and present situation of the country is is very unclear and dangerous.

There is no existing film industry because almost everyone who knows something about film leaves the country because they couldn't see a future for it. Now they live in refugee camps all around the world. Therefore we need to mix our crew with international professionals and Afghan crew, which means we need a stable security set-up. We will also be shooting in a very remote place in Central Afghanistan, which means all crew, equipment and trailers need to be transported there.

If you support this film you are not only supporting this one project, but you are helping build an entire film-culture with independent movies in a country where there have never been art house films, and where the people are just beginning to discover their ability to tell their own story.

Some of my other work

Shahrbanoo Sadat is a young Afghan female scriptwriter, producer and director. She is based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Shahr studied documentary in "Atelier Varan Kabul" a French Documentary Workshop in 2009 in Kabul.

Her first short fiction "Vice Versa One” was selected at Directors' Fortnight, Cannes Film Festival in 2011 and shown at MOMA. She made " Not At Home", a hybrid project that was developed and produced within a year with the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival's initiative DOX: LAB and was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2014.

In 2013, she opened her own production company "Wolf Pictures" in Kabul. At the moment, she is in preproduction for her first feature film "Wolf and Sheep". Shooting is scheduled in May 2015 in Afghanistan. The film was developed with the Cannes Cinefondation Residency in 2010, Shahrbanoo was 20 years old at the time - the youngest ever selected for the residence.

Challenges

Security is a big factor here. We had to postpone the shooting once already because the situation in Afghanistan was too intense and risky to be able to go there with an international crew and shoot.

We are now in contact with one of the best security companies in Denmark about having them as security at the shoot.

There is also mining danger because we will shoot most of the film in the mountains. For this reason we are in contact with international mine cleaning companies in Kabul, and have received maps of the area with the mines marked out. We are also discussing taking the entire crew on workshop about how to handle mine-areas.

Dear all, instead of spamming you on email we decided to invite you to this wonderful event of making the film WOLF AND SHEEP a reality!
