World Debut: 2016 Cadillac

Because benchmarks are there to be broken.
Last week we were treated to a sneak preview of the new 2016 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe. Today, alongside its ATS-V sedan counterpart, is the official unveiling at the LA Auto Show. Set to go on sale next spring, the ATS-V coupe and sedan are powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 rated at 455 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac is quick to point out this engine is the segment’s highest-output six-cylinder. 0-60 mph happens in 3.9 seconds and top speed is in excess of 185 mph.

Sending all that power to the rear wheels is either a six-speed manual with Active Rev Match or an optional eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters and launch control. Other features include Brembo high-performance brakes, third-generation Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Traction Management, a structural stiffness increased by 25 percent for better cornering, driver-selectable driving modes (touring, sport and track), and an optional downforce-generating track aero package. For the record, the hood vent (the hood itself is made from carbon fiber) and other new exterior elements are all functional and not just for show.

That vent not only pulls hot air out of the engine compartment, but helps reduce lift at speed by channeling air pulled through the radiator out and over the top of the car. The front and rear fascias also provide optimal aero performance. Even the mesh pattern on the front grille is enlarged to allow more air into the radiator. Also included is a front splitter, wider fenders, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear spoiler. The interior features Recaro performance front seats, and a 5.7-inch three-window instrument display cluster that includes Bluetooth and OnStar 4G LTE connectivity. Official pricing hasn’t been announced, but we can’t imagine the ATS-V sedan and coupe will cost more than their M3 and M4 rivals.
