The Giant Clams of Mabini

DESCRIPTION

It was one of the best moments of my life when I personally saw in my own eyes these giant clams without traveling to Palawan. It even makes me happy that our own province, Bohol and just a neighboring town from home is offering these free viewing of the 18 giant clams which were planted in the Lumayag Sand Bar.

These giant clams are the generator of pearls and would spit them out when they are big enough. They come from Palawan which have been bought at 20,000 Philippine pesos each just to bring them to Mabini. They were brought via an aircraft but there was thorough testing on the waters of Mabini before bringing them to the place.

The best thing about it is that it is properly protected and strict things have to be observed when at the area. There are Bantay Dagat personnel who will help and assist tourists while in the area. They will also advise the tourists with what can only be done in the area. The waters is just shallow so one can walk or swim but it is very important to be aware if there is a giant clam around as it has a tendency of shutting off its shell when it feels some danger is around the area.

It was a great opportunity and I had the chance to take a video of these clams. they have different colors, there were dark ones, yellow or orange ones too!

Enjoy the video guys!
