A gargantuan glacier, 100 meters thick and 500 meters wide lies at the peaks of the Tianshan mountain range, surrounded by ice caves and valleys. This is the source of the Urumqi River, and although it is too COLD up here for many travelers, this area is one of the most important in the world in terms of research and development.

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States.
From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side, separated by Goat Island. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls are also located on the American side, separated from the other waterfalls by Luna Island.

The combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with a vertical drop of more than 165 feet (50 m). Niagara Falls were formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age), and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean. While not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls are very wide.

The Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Managing the balance between recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 19th century.

Lake Baikal is also among the clearest of all lakes, and thought to be the world’s oldest at 25 million years. It is the 7th largest lake in the world by surface area.

Skye or the Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly large island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island’s peninsulas radiate from a mountainous center dominated by rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country.

The local flora is dominated by heather moor, and there are nationally important invertebrate populations on the surrounding sea bed. Tall, rocky mountains tower over a small lake, beyond which a waterfall cascades down from the heights. Brown and black cattle stand by the lakes margins, lit by wan sunlight that streams through the clouds.

Iguazu Falls was announced as one of the seven winners of the New Seven Wonders of Nature by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation.

Both sides of the park are well served with foot trails. On the Argentine side of the park there’s a small train leaving about every half an hour from near the entrance going all the way to the beginning of the trail to the Garganta del Diablo. On the Brazilian side, there’s a bus service connecting the falls with other activities.

The Iguaçu Falls are an awesome sight as tonnes of water throw themselves over cliffs and the mist rises into the jungle. They are taller than Niagara Falls, and twice as wide, for which Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have exclaimed on her first sight of the Falls: “Poor Niagara!”
It is well worth spending a day on each side of the falls, especially if you plan to do any of the boat rides or other activities offered.
Don’t just rush past the main viewpoints and leave. It’s important to get a good perspective on the park overall to appreciate this awesome sight.
Whilst the majority of the falls are in Argentina, a better overview is had from the Brazilian side.

Big Island is home to the most active volcano in the world, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as well as the largest mountain in the world in volume (Mauna Loa) and the tallest mountain in the world as measured from its base on the sea floor to its peak (Mauna Kea).

It is only 2.19 square kilometers (0.85 sq mi) and is primarily known as a secluded, private luxury resort and its Anse Victorin beach was voted “The World’s Best Beach” by The Times.

The island is covered with takamaka, cashew and Indian almond trees and is home to the rare Seychelles Magpie Robin as well as several relocated Aldabra Giant Tortoises. It also has endemic species, including the flightless Frégate Island giant tenebrionid beetle and some species of millipedes.
