A day with NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority)

A few days ago I paid a visit to NADRA.

What is NADRA?

NADRA is that government office in Pakistan which makes our National identity cards (CNIC), our marriage certificates and our birth certificates as well. I paid a visit to the Memon Goth office in Malir Disrict .

It was a very interesting visit, I had gone to make a CNIC for a family member, as I entered the compound of the office, I saw three long lines of applicants standing in  rows. When I checked the headings of the windows to which these three lines ended I found that I had to join the first line. Now I had atleast 30 people in front of me, silently I had to go and stand at the end of the line, after standing for 5 minutes I realized that one man who was standing before me by 7 people suddenly came back and stood in front of me, surprised I asked him that if he keeps giving his place to people when will he get his own job done? he answered me smilingly, " I don't have anything to do here, I just stand in the line and if people are in a hurry I give them my place in and charge rupees 100 in return.

I was extremely surprised at this kind on answer and could make a judgement of the kind of people working inside. looking back I realized that I cant work it out here anymore, I returned home.
