Assessing the fertility status of Khushal Garh Area, Kohat, KPK

Posted on at

Introduction:            Crop production directly depends on the nutritional status of the soil. If the soil is more fertile, the farmer will get more production from the land. So, for profitable crop production the availability of essential plant nutrients in proper amount and the physical condition of the soil must be improved. To know about the actual nutritional status of the soil, soil diagnosis must be continued from time to time and after every three years.

Materials and methods:    A total of 30 soil samples were collected from Khushal Garh area to a depth of 1' depth. The soil samples were brought to the Soil Laboratory Kohat and were air-dried, grinded, passed through 2mm mesh sieve and were subjected to physic-chemical analysis i.e. pH, texture, Electrical conductivity, %lime, % organic matter and % nitrogen.

Results and discussion:  The data presented in table-SS 2.1. The data revealed that the mean pH value of 30 soil samples was 7.84 which is varied from 7.41 at Dhok Malak to 8.31 near the road at Khushal Garh. The salt contents were in the normal range inside the village of Dhok Bat and near the road. The organic matter content and nitrogen is deficit in the area. The lime content of the soil was found in the range of 6.25 to 21.25% with a mean value of 15.51%. The soil of Khushal Garh is calcareous to strongly calcareous. All the soil samples analyzed were slightly alkaline, deficient in organic matter. The soil has variable texture and mostly was sandy loam to sandy clay loam.

Recommendations:

The soils of Khushal Garh area are strongly calcareous. They are deficient in organic matter and have slightly alkaline pH. Well decomposed organic matter addition before sowing of each crop is recommended. Use of Amm-Sulphate & Single Super Phosphate is recommended for Khushal Garh area.
