Agriculture in dry land areas is more complicated /uncertain than irrigated areas, because it depends on rain and nature. The primary objective of Barani Agricultural Research Station, Kohat (KPK, Pakistan) has been multi disciplinary and target oriented research of barani agriculture. This station has achieved commendable targets in wheat suitable for rainfed and semi rainfed areas of Kohat region by evolving high yielding, disease and drought tolerant varieties like KT-2000, KT-2003 & KT-2010. Similarly introduction of high yielding varieties of cereals like Kohat-98 (Millet) and establishment different orchards of Guava, Citrus and Date palm. Moreover, developed and disseminated production technology for various agricultural commodities like wheat, millet, sorghum, canola, letil, caralluma, asparagus and mushroom etc. True to type Guava production under the project “ Research & Development of Guava in Kohat Division” is under process. 10,000 cuttings of Guava has been produced and 330 germplasm has been collected. Similarly, research on non-traditional vegetable “Caralluma” is continued under the project “Research & Development of Caralluma in KPK’. 110 germplasm has been collected from different areas of KPK and 30 research experiments has been laid out. Experiments on guar are recently initiated on various lines/ varieties from Bahawalpur. This year 9.5 tones quality seed of wheat has been produces. The BARS, is also extending soil and water testing facilities to farmers as advisory services for maintenance of their soil fertility by diagnostic nutrients deficiencies. Obviously, research is incomplete unless the end used/ farmers bring it in their practice, It is hoped that in future, these efforts would be further enhanced. The credit goes to the devoted scientists as well as cooperative growers and other supporting staff of the station. Wishing BARS Kohat greater success in the future plans & programs.
