Hello, Bitlanders! Today, I made a blog that is very important and is needing much attention, that is, agriculture.

Agriculture plays an essential role in the life of an economy of every country because it is the source of food for the entire population. Agriculture also provides employment opportunities, and these opportunities are not only for those who are in farms but also in processing, advertising, and packaging of agricultural products.

In agriculture, we need to deal with issues such as climate change, population growth, and food security concerns that are extremely irrepressible. The challenge is how to produce enough food for all despite all these odds. Digital technologies such as mobile applications, automation, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, global positioning system, and drones are at hand. They are loaded with seamless potentials in terms of precision and efficiency. With these technologies, what could be painstaking to accomplish can now be done with less physical exertion.

The most popular applications of AI in agriculture appear to fall into three major categories:

·          Agricultural Robots – Companies are developing and programming autonomous robots to handle essential agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops at a higher volume and faster pace than human laborers.

·          Crop and Soil Monitoring – Companies are leveraging computer vision and deep-learning algorithms to process data captured by drones and/or software-based technology to monitor crop and soil health.

·          Predictive Analytics – Machine learning models are being developed to track and predict various environmental impacts on crop yield such as weather changes.

Agriculture’s Online Business App – Krops

Microsoft is currently collaborating on an agricultural mobile application called Krops, which has significantly helped local farmers increase their profit from their yield. Krops is an Azure-based e-commerce platform that is supported by our AI-grounded Power BI analytics tool. It has essentially placed control of buying and selling directly into the hands of farmers and buyers.

With Krops, farmers list their location, harvested crops, and the price they want to sell them, accompanied with pictures of the product. These are then listed under location, price, and product type for buyers to choose from. All the buyer needs to do is scroll through the different produce listing, find what he or she needs, click on the purchase, and effect a bank transfer that signals the farmer to dispatch the products.

AI, through Power BI, comes in when we talk of supply and demand trends. Through this tool, field officers are quickly able to see which types of product or crops are in demand or are in potential glut so that farmers can adjust their production volumes and crop types accordingly.

Through community-based volunteers and Microsoft’s AI and cloud technology, we are able to gather data and translate that into information, which is then used to prepare for disasters, including planning the amount of emergency supplies such as food and water and scaling evacuation and response team levels.

Final Thoughts

AI in agriculture means more food for the world.

AI-driven technologies are emerging to help improve efficiency and to address challenges facing the industry including crop yield, soil health, and herbicide resistance. Agricultural robots are poised to become a highly valued application of AI in Agriculture. The amount of data that can potentially be captured by technologies such as drones and satellites on a daily basis will give agricultural business a new ability to predict changes and identify opportunities.

Exploring the technology serves at least two purposes: first is to bring it further to the ground for wide-scale application and second is to attract young people to go back to farming.

The future is bright for technology in agriculture. We are in an exciting time to continually enhance the industry and leave an impact on the world for years to come. The agricultural industry will continue to see steady adoption of AI and will continue to monitor this trend.
