Buzzing new members for buzz bonus

Posted on at

As you may be aware, Bitlanders allows spending gems to promote a post, whereby people who buzz the post receive daily buzz bonuses.  As you might expect, a number of experienced Bitlanders with high quality posts have chosen to accept this option.

What is perhaps a less know, and interesting, phenomenon is that of individuals with buzz scores of zero or one, promoting inconsequential posts.  The story is not to figure out.   My own story provides instruction.  When I joined, I did not really know what the gems are for, but the site said it was a good thing to make purchases for charity, so I bought a bunch of the T-Shirts at 3 gems a piece for my Avatar.  I received a whole bunch of buzz bonus when I did not really need it, and have lacked the ability since to promote an article, or submit it for review.  Presumably, if I had been the type of person who said I would not make a donation, I would not have had this problem.

The issue of low buzz score members promoting lousy posts presents exactly the same problem, but with a different result.  Instead of buying unnecessary buzz new members are spending their gems to promote a post unnecessarily.  The bad part is the same.  Good writers cannot receive recognition for writing, and spend all their time on the site just clicking buttons.

There are two sides to this phenomena.  On the one hand, it is good to tell new members not to spend gems at the start for any reason.  Really, the game should not even allow new members to spend gems, until they have receive some decent level of instruction as to what they are for.  Since the game would rather have the new members spend their gems foolishly, and go through the game with a sense of disenfranchisement, telling new members not to do, is the only way it is going to happen.

On the other hand, if a new member has already spent the gems unnecessarily, there is nothing that other members can do about this, except to claim the daily buzz bonus that results.  Perhaps, when you receive the bonus, you can do something nice Bitlanders-wise for the new member.  In the meantime, don't forget to check out these new members.  Over the past two days, I received 5 direct power ups from members with 0 or 1 base buzz, for lousy posts.  We aren't on here because we are rich, so that kind of buzz can make a difference.
