Easter Island

The Eater Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world. It is the Polynesian island found in the southeast Pacific Ocean. It gets it English name from the tale that it was discovered on an Easter Sunday by Europeans. The people of the island like to call themselves as Rapa Nui. There are statues in the shape of head and torso throughout the island sculpted out of volcanic rocks for reasons still unknown. Some scientific and archaeological studies suggest that it was a way to pay respect to their ancestors, chiefs and other important persons. These statues are called Moai. There are approximately 900 Moais across the island about 13 feet tall and each weighing about 14 tons. Rano Raraku quarry is believed to have yielded the stones for the Moai structures.

It is still unknown exactly who first settled on the islands or how did they even reached there because it was somewhat impossible in those times. Even the story of how did its isolation began is unclear but recent archeological job has enlighten some of the island’s mysterious history. Now many of the moais are reversing in terms of creation process and deteriorating into plain rock
