Fiction or Fantasy?

Posted on at

This blog was inspired a couple of days ago. Basically i am interested in what people think about Fiction and if its really just a fantasy story. Personally, i believe that as a filmmaker, you have two paths to take. Fiction or non-fiction. It really is that simple, there is no fantasy fairytale or silly effects to put dragons and orcs on the screen. No. There is only two choices and they both are viable paths in the industry. A non-fiction will tell straight facts or at least keep film within the boundaries of realism. Nothing would happen on screen that would not happen in real life. This is to feed truth to the audience, to show them a window into parallel existence. Whereas fiction explores the creativity of the mind where anything is possible. I believe that doing a fiction for a student film should not be scorned upon, but it should be encouraged. I have a module where they try and get us to find our creative side and yet they prefer we do not explore how to put creativity into film. Reasons such as budget, set design and special effects really don't come into play unless you make them. A fiction film could be incredibly simple and it could also be really interesting. Key concepts can be conveyed through fiction films much easier because abstract use of creativity can show the audience in a way that a non-fiction can't.

There is a short film called The Black Hole and it is a fiction film that is insanely simple and yet it teaches us about greed and karma in an entertaining light hearted way. Please watch it if you have the time.
