Film Promotion and Social Media for Filmmakers and Movie Studios

Posted on at

I wanted to follow up on my last blog post as I have watched this video about the social media revolution which gives amazing – and quite scary in a way – statistics about social media and the place that it has taken in our lives.

Social media is taking over the other ways to communicate and eventually promote products. It made me wonder what is more effective in film promotion: billboards with famous actors’ names, an intriguing teaser, word of mouth and recommendations from your entourage, a fun online campaign?

Maybe film distribution companies could take a look at the music industry. A lot of bands are now tweetering all day to be closer to their fans, updating their profile about whatever city they just arrived in or the new song they are working on. Why can't movie directors or producers do the same: a director tweetering about the last scene he shot 2 minutes before or a Hollywood studio informing their followers about the last script that arrived on their desk. What about asking the public to participate in their projects, even give suggestions about the making of the movie or the choice of the actors?

How would it be to go to a movie and feel like you took part in the process at some point and even contributed to its creative process? Years ago, if you had a fantastic idea about a movie or a couple of suggestions, you could mail the studio. Today, you reach them by Twitter and will eventually catch their attention.

Let’s not ignore what social media can provide businesses, whatever they are. So, filmmakers, take your projects to the next lever: go online, talk, show your work, get feedback, and receive help.
