Floods come every year and damage properties and lives. They bring horrible diseases and death. Standing crops are ruined. Green fields turn into vast lakes and mud houses collapse. Both men and animals are drowned. Bridges and roads are swept away. All sources of communication and transportation are disturbed. Life seems to be at a standstill.

After ragging flood water, many problems can be seen. For example standing water creates fetal diseases. People have to begin their new lives with limited means.

In 1992, flood brought a big disaster in Pakistan. Punjab , northern areas and Azad Kashmir suffered extensive loses. Thousands of villages were completely swept away or got damaged. The standing crops of various kinds disappeared. Sources of livelihood completely ruined. Hungry water have eaten much of stock. More than three or four thousand people were drowned. Roads and railway lines were also damaged.

But one thing is obvious that ignorance of officials and wrong planning were the main causes of that flood. When the water came, the engineer opened the spillways without giving any warning. To the people who were living near the river area. The criminal ignorance caused the loss of life and property.

The power of flood was increased manifold as a result of deforestation. Forest plays an important role to prevent flood. But the government , unfortunately did not take interest in it.

If we want to save ourselves from the danger of floods in future, we will have to prepare plans for it. Some of the measures that can be taken to avoid this disaster are projective bundles river bank afforestation , increasing plantation , dames and barrages, strengthening the bank of rivers and canals.

Similarly flood water can be supplied to barren areas like Cholestan and Thal by creating flood canals.

Both of the government and people should help the flood victims. Clothes, eatables, medicines and clean water and their necessary needs. The generous people should donate to those who have born this disaster. Government should take steps to ensure that the relief material and funds should reach the needy and deserving people and are not misappropriated by the corrupt officials.
