Greeks buy Playstations and Macs amid bank closures

As members of the Eurozone give Greece one more day to come up with new proposals to secure deals with its international creditors and stay in the Eurozone, the country’s citizens are spending their money not just on their daily needs, but Playstations and Apple products.

Natasa, a 33-year-old shop assistant at electronics retailer Plaisio Computer SA in central Athens, spoke to Bloomberg about the spending habits of her fellow Greeks. “People are spending the money they have in the bank because otherwise they’re afraid they won’t get it out...A Mac is something that keeps its value.”

Elizabeth, 44, who lives in Athens and works in tourism, said she was going to buy a laptop because she, “might not have the chance to buy one later.”

Charles Allen, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, says the demand is partly driven by fears that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will not be able to come through and prices will skyrocket once Greece leaves the Eurozone.
