Philips Health Watch – A Consumer Medical Device

One thing we all love about wearables is the power and capabilities these little devices carry with them. Thanks to these portable, mini computers and their health-medical connected apps, we can nowadays monitor and keep record – in real time – of more health related data than ever before.

Philips announced At IFA 2015, in Berlin of course, a new range of dedicated personal health programs and products, with the aim of taking healthcare outside hospitals, make easier, cheaper, more personal and friendlier

“Philips Personal Health Program” revealed in Berlin, was the “Health Watch”. This device is a smartwatch designed with accent on analysing data from the users wrist and it was suggestively named Philips Health Watch.

The “Health Watch” incorporates an accelerometer, an optical heart-rate sensor and intelligent sensors capable of accurately tracking activity and sleep patterns.

As most of the work is done on the smartphone, Bluetooth connectivity is necessary only to check the data the Philips Health Watch has collected from the wrist and processed. Detailed, analysed data like total calories spent, calorie intake, activity, body fat, steps, active minutes, blood pressure and sleep is then available through Phillips’ HealthSuite app on the smartphone of your choice.

There is also a memory LCD screen – not touchscreen – on the watch that allows the user to view the data if the smartphone is out of battery.

A feature that we discussed here at WT VOX and we like a lot is the given option to share the collected data with medical professionals if needed via a cloud based, open source platform.

If you decide to join you’ll be able to benefit from personalised suggestions from the doctors and the psychologists that helped Philips to create long term behavioural changes and healthy lifestyles. This is something hot on the market at the moment, Apple, IBM, Intel are all working towards a digital health future.

The open source, cloud based platform is called “Philips Digital Health Platform” and it is a direct competitor to Apple’s ResearchKit platform.
