Migrate from HDD to SSD (part 1)

Posted on at

20 years back HDD introduced and it initially had a storage capacity of 1 GB or round about. Before Hard Disk Drive there were low capacity memories like floppy disk. The invention of HDD really appreciated and people likes it because it was faster than old storage devices and having more space than older ones. But now people migrating to new technology drive which introduced in 2008 and that is SSD (solid state drive). If you don’t know much about SSD then let me explain in short words, if you familiar with USB flash memory stick then it is just oversized version of humble flash drives.

SSD have very fast data manipulation speed. Mostly laptops coming now have preinstalled SSD because it consumes very little power as compare to Hard Disk Drive. For example if a new laptop preinstalled Hard Disk Drive and its battery backup is 6 hours and if the same laptop having SSD then it gives approximately 10 hours because HDD have a servo motor but doesn’t contain any motor. Only it contains a printed circuit board. We know SSD is costly but it is good for the laptops even though people using it with desktops too.

Let us compare HDD and SSD. First take speed, SSD is much faster than HDD. A desktop or laptop having SSD installed boots in seconds while HDD contained PC’s take much time or 8x time. 2nd is power, SSD operates on 2 to 3 watts and HDD takes 7 to 8 watts.

3rd is cost, SSD is sooo much expensive, round about 1 dollar per GB (based on 240 GB) but HDD 0.06 dollars per GB (based on 2 TB). 4th factor is noise, as we know there is no moving thing like motor so there is zero noise but Hard Disk Drive produce noise over the time of usage which is very annoying. I will discuss the more comparisons and differences between SSD and HDD in next post.
